Seminar in Asian History: Gender Feminisms and Girlhoods in Modern South AsiaAs one of the largest populations of the world South Asians have played instrumental roles in shaping the history of feminism and gender equity movements. Modern South Asia has been an important site for feminist activism and scholarship producing pioneering female leaders and thinkers. This course examines the rich and complex modern history of feminism and girlhoods in South Asia through an intersectional lens. Students will explore how a variety of social and political factors including caste religion and postcolonialism have interplayed with gender to shape the histories and experiences of women and gender minorities in the region.
