Birmingham City Council is one of the largest local authorities in Europe supporting over a million citizens through a complex landscape of digital systems and services. Within Digital & Technology Services our Applications function underpins the delivery of critical services across areas such as Housing Revenues & Benefits Social Care and Education.

We are looking for Associate Application Support Engineers to join our team supporting a broad range of business-critical applications that are essential to the day-to-day running of the Council.

This role is suited to individuals who already have some experience of working with applications or digital systems and who are looking to build on that foundation within a large complex environment. You will be expected to contribute to live support activity from day one working with guidance but taking ownership of lower to medium complexity tasks.

You will support the resolution of incidents and service requests assist with application troubleshooting and contribute to system monitoring and performance activities to ensure services remain stable and reliable.

You will also support configuration maintenance and upgrade activities across a wide range of applications and platforms working alongside experienced engineers to implement changes test updates and help maintain secure and compliant systems.

As part of a wider Applications function supporting over 300 systems you will gain exposure to integrated platforms data flows and the way technology supports key Council services and statutory functions. This includes developing your understanding of areas such as access management system configuration and how applications interact across a complex estate.

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Some experience supporting applications IT systems or digital services
  • The ability to troubleshoot issues and work through problems logically
  • Experience working in a structured environment where accuracy and attention to detail are important
  • The ability to manage their own workload with support where needed
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with both technical teams and business users
  • Experience may have been gained through previous roles education or hands-on exposure to systems and technologies but candidates should be comfortable working in a live support environment and contributing to service delivery.
