JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: School Security Specialist

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Director of School Safety and Security

Pay Grade: Admin / Prof 01(261)

Department: School Safety and Security

Primary Purpose:

Coordinate and supervise the overallfunctionsall security officers throughout Irving ISD.Under general supervision ensure a high degree of protection safety and security for students personnel visitors and property by coordinating activities of thedistrictssecurity officers to the highest standards possible.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma or GEDrequired
  • Bachelors Degreeor equivalent years of experience in the related field
  • preferred
  • Law Enforcement Certification preferred (in lieu of certification experience may be considered)
  • Texas DPS-issued valid License to Carry
  • DPS School Safety Firearms Courserequiredor must be obtained within30 daysof employment
  • Level 3 Security License (Armed)requiredor must be obtained within 6 months of employment
  • Valid Texas drivers license and proof of insurability with District insurance carrier

Experience

  • Five (5)yearssecurity experience withdemonstratedsupervisory skills preferably inan educationalenvironment; other experience may be considered.

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Ability to pass a standard fitness exam annually.
  • Ability to pass random drug screenings.
  • Ability to pass a psychological evaluation upon recommendation forhire andevery two years.
  • Obtain a passing score (90% ) on a pistol qualification course bi-annually.
  • Knowledge of emergency operations planning.
  • Knowledge of NIMS and FEMA.
  • Knowledge of health and safety programs and applicable laws.
  • Broad knowledge of schoolsafety and security procedures.
  • Ability tolead andsupervisestaff.
  • Ability to work effectively with campus-based administrators and staff.
  • Knowledgeof security computer hardware and software programs related toclosed circuit televisioncontrolledaccessemergencymanagementand visitoridentification.
  • Knowledge of local state and federal laws as well as policies and requirements as they relate to studentsstaffand the school system.
  • Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations andmaintainandexhibit emotionalcontrol.
  • Ability to clearly communicate in Englishboth written and verbal; ability to verballycommunicatein Spanish preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

General oversight and daily supervision ofdistrictssecurity armed securityand campusauxiliaryofficers.

Program Management

  • Coordinatework schedules ofcampus auxiliary officers andassistin ensuring schools are properly and adequately staffed with campus auxiliary officers.
  • Assist the Director of School Safety andSecurityin creating and implementing safety and security plans in cooperation with the Irving Police Department or other law enforcement agencies.
  • Ensure all routine paperwork is completed andsubmittedin a timely mannertoDirector of School Safety and Security.
  • Assess emergency situations as they occur reporting information to theDirector of School Safety and Securityand/or on-duty management.
  • Assist the Emergency Management Coordinator in conductingannual crisis management tabletop training with campus crisis teams campus auxiliary officers andSROs.
  • Maintain the ability to work a variety of shiftschanging onshort notice and fill-in as needed to cover absences within the campus auxiliary officer program.

Communication

  • Collaborate and coordinate with theDirector of School Safety and SecurityregardingDistrictactivities;and provide input and feedbackregardingday-to-day operations ofall security officers.

Personnel Management

  • Maintain professional standards of conduct for all assigned personnel.
  • Ensureassigned personnelwear the appropriate uniform atall timesduring working hoursutilizeproperradioand telephone etiquette andabide bytime-keeping procedures.
  • Ensureassigned personneladhere to the arrival and departure schedule of assigned campus.
  • AssistDirector of School Safety and Securityinevaluating candidates interviewing hiringandconducting annual evaluations ofthe districts security officers.

Professional Development

  • Conductmonthly safety andinformational staff meetings and routineon-the-job training.

Assistin coordinatingadditionalcertification training forthe districts securityofficersasneeded.

Other

  • Establish and maintain a professional rapport with resource officers and staff; exhibit behavior that is professional ethical and responsible; and serve as a role model and maintain professional standards of conduct with students personnel parents and visitors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Safety

  • Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training wearing personal protective equipment as required reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.

Environment:Work outside and inside on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; moderate exposure to hot and cold temperatures humidconditions and inclement weather; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours and on call
