Job Summary

Location: Remote with travel to The Hague and Belgium
Security Clearance: Not required
Contract: Long-term (initial until end of 2026 extensions to 2028)

Why this role exists

NATO is moving from research into real-world AI deployment in missile defence systems. This project sits at the centre of that shift.

You will not be advising on AI.
You will define how AI is actually applied in operational defence scenarios.

What you will do

  • Define AI/ML use cases for ballistic missile defence systems

  • Lead feasibility studies on advanced AI approaches including deep learning and LLMs

  • Design AI strategy and data architecture frameworks

  • Translate complex AI concepts into actionable decisions for defence stakeholders

  • Work directly with NATO programme teams and operational users

  • Shape responsible AI frameworks aligned with NATO standards

You will act as the intellectual and strategic lead of the AI direction.

What we are looking for

  • 15 years in AI machine learning or related R&D fields

  • Deep expertise in modern AI architectures (Transformers deep learning generative AI)

  • Proven experience leading AI research or large-scale AI programmes

  • Strong track record in feasibility studies and technology roadmapping

  • Ability to communicate complex AI topics to non-technical stakeholders

  • Experience with defence government or large institutional environments

Strong advantage:

  • Publications academic background or PhD

  • Experience with NATO defence AI or sensor / decision systems

What makes this role different

  • Direct impact on next-generation defence systems

  • High-level strategic influence not execution-only

  • Work with both technical teams and decision-makers

  • Multi-year programme with continuity

Important

  • Must hold nationality of a NATO country

  • English fluency required
