As a heavy equipment mechanic with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) youll play a critical role in maintaining and repairing the fleet that keeps Michigan moving. Based out of the Paw Paw Central Repair Facility youll perform a full range of maintenance and repair work on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment - everything from preventive maintenance to advanced diagnostics. Youll also use computerized systems to document repairs prepare work orders and estimate materials and costs.
Youll have access to the tools you need to succeed; MDOT provides the necessary equipment so you can focus on the work not the expense of building your own addition to working in the shop youll operate large vehicles and trailer combinations (26001-plus gross vehicle weight rating) to road-test equipment and ensure repairs meet performance and safety standards.

As the next heavy equipment mechanic you would be responsible for:
- Performing maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of heavy equipment including but not limited to heavy-duty trucks and semi-tractors back hoes skid steer and articulating loaders rotary screw compressors graders aerial towers spray equipment cement saws and trailers.
- Installing servicing repairing and maintaining material spreaders underbody blades dump bodies snowplows and systems associated with snowplow trucks.
- Utilizing computers and computerized software for diagnosis and work order data entry
- Fabricating modifying and installing special equipment or replacement parts using welders (MIG and TIG) acetylene torch sets plasma cutters metal cutting saws mills and lathes.
- Servicing repairing and maintaining components of aerial man-lifts and cranes.
- Performing inspections outlined in the owners manuals American National Standards Institute and Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) regulations.

The Salary listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (8) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E10) level. Based on education and experience candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic 9
Two years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic E10
Four years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment including two years equivalent to a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 9.Alternate Education and Experience
Possession of an associate degree in Heavy Duty Truck/Heavy Equipment Repair may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Completion of 12 semester (18 term) credits in one or more of the following coursework areas: heavy duty truck heavy equipment repair diesel engines math or physics may be substituted for one year of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of automobiles may be substituted for one year of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Additional Requirements and Information
Possession of a Commercial Learners Permit upon appointment to the position. Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.

The selected candidate may be required to submit to and pass a pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test and physical (if applicable) and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing while employed in this position.
