BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The World Food Programmes Food Security and Nutrition Analysis supports Country Offices Regional Offices governments and partners with evidence to identify populations in need inform response options monitor risks and guide programme decisions. Food security analysis includes household and market assessments spatial analysis early warning price monitoring economic analysis and applied research.

The Economic and Market Analysis Unit contributes to WFPs work on market assessments food price monitoring economic analysis modelling of shocks and applied research to inform operations. A key tool in this area is the Market Functionality Index (MFI) which supports WFP in assessing local market functionality and informing response analysis including the feasibility and risks of market-based assistance.

The intern will support ongoing analytical work aimed at turning the MFI into operational evidence for food security response analysis. The assignment will help demonstrate that the MFI is not only a market score but an operational decision tool that can inform food security analysis resilience monitoring and response option discussions.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The assignment will contribute to applied research and operational analysis on the relationship between market functionality and food particular it will support ongoing work on how MFI data can be used to:

how markets contribute to household resilience during shocks;

MFI and food security indicators to support operational decisions including cash/in-kind response analysis;

which MFI dimensions are most strongly associated with food security outcomes;

when a rapid/reduced MFI may be sufficient and when a full MFI assessment is needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Economist and MFI focal point the intern will:

data preparation and reproducible analysis

oClean and structure MFI food security price shock and contextual datasets;

oSupport a reproducible analysis workflow including scripts and documentation;

oPrepare data quality checks coverage tables and summary diagnostics.

applied statistical analysis

oAnalyse the relationship between MFI and food security outcomes;

oExplore whether better-functioning markets are associated with greater resilience during shocks;

oSupport analysis of market-related channels (e.g. prices availability resilience of supply chains and access constraints);

oCompare the operational value of full MFI and rapid/reduced MFI approaches.

knowledge products

oContribute to a short WFP-style operational brief;

oSupport drafting a short piece such as a blog post or evidence note;

oDocument methods and outputs clearly to support future replication and scale-up.

EXPECTED DELIVERABLES

By the end of the assignment the intern is expected to:

a short blog-style piece base on the findings;

a short 35-page WFP-style note showing how MFI can inform response analysis;

a reproducible analysis package with a clean dataset and documented codes;

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate programme in statistics data science economics or a related field.

Knowledge and skills

Strong quantitative and statistical analysis skills;

Experience with Python Stata/R;

Ability to clean merge and document complex datasets;

Knowledge of regression analysis panel data methods or causal inference is an asset;

Interest in food security markets humanitarian operations or development economics;

Good written communication skills;

Ability to as part of a multicultural team.

Languages

Fluent written and spoken English (level C) is required;

Working knowledge of French is an asset.
