Job Summary

Position Summary

Salary: $42.38 - $50.37/hour upon meeting progression step requirements. MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick vacation personal and holiday time; Not eligible to work a remote schedule. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

This position will install maintain repair and alter high voltage (over 600 volts) electrical distribution systems transformers generators switchgear and components including the most fundamental repairs and maintenance.

Further breakdown of job responsibilities is as follows:
40%: Perform preventive maintenance on substations generators protective relays programmable logic controllers and other industrial control systems.

40%: Repair deteriorated electrical utility equipment troubleshoot low- and hi-voltage breakers meters and other related electrical equipment.

10%: Install cable transformers switch gear duct bank metering splice and terminate medium voltage cable.

10%: Correspondence through email training meetings and professional development.

This position will engage in high performing leading edge practices valuing people partners and stewardship.

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience
  • Successful completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship program
  • Eight years of experience in the electrical trade with at least two years as a state-licensed MSU Electrician and at least two years working with high voltage (over 600 volts and above).
  • Six years of experience in installing commercial/industrial electrical distribution systems maintenance and trouble-shooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification or equivalent education/experience;
  • Possession of a State of Michigan Master Electrician license (Class II)
  • Expert knowledge of the equipment methods and materials used in the repair and installation of primary electrical systems
  • Expert knowledge of the maintenance requirements of primary electrical equipment fixtures and devices
  • Expert knowledge of methods materials tools equipment occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Expert knowledge of applicable electrical codes rules and regulations (local state and national)
  • Operate a computer effectively using job-related databases.
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operators license. Must drive a University vehicle to perform the duties of this classification and meet the Universities rigorous safe driving standards.
  • Must furnish own hand tools
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.
  • Must successfully complete the IPF High Voltage development program within three years.
  • This position requires responding promptly to after-hours call-ins for emergency situations.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working in a power plant or other industrial environment; experience in facilities operations; successful completion of the IPF High Voltage Development Program; ability to test and analyze abnormal electrical events; ability to read and interpret blueprints drawings and schematics; fork truck certification; and a strong record of interpersonal skills including effective communication creative and innovative problem-solving conflict management team building motivation and engendering trust.

Work Hours

NON-STANDARD/VARIABLE WORK HOURS: Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm and may require after-hours weekend and holiday work.
