Job Summary

The Senior Bridge Maintenance Worker under general supervision acts as a lead worker for a bridge maintenance crew. This class is distinguished from Highway Maintenance classes in that it requires experience and skill in heavy timber construction pouring and reinforcing concrete and steel fabrication.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Methods materials tools and equipment used in the construction and repair of reinforced concrete timber and steel bridges culverts and related structures;
  • operation and maintenance of equipment used in bridge maintenance and construction;
  • rigging and scaffolding;
  • General Safety Orders and Construction Safety Orders as issued by the Division of Industrial Safety.
Ability to
  • Perform skilled tasks involving carpentry heavy timber steel and reinforced concrete work;
  • use a wide variety of hand tools;
  • operate and maintain air compressors cement mixers generators welding equipment and electric saws and drills;
  • follow oral and written directions;
  • direct the work of subordinates.

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Either:One year of experience in the class of Bridge Maintenance Worker.

Or:Three years of experience in the construction maintenance and repair of bridge or other heavy timber concrete or steel structures including rigging and working at high elevations.

Note: If the word experience is referenced in the minimum qualifications it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

Special Requirements

Drivers License: Possession of a valid California Drivers license Class B will be required prior to appointment. An employee in this class must possess a Class A California Drivers license within 90 days of appointment.

Note: Employees appointed to a position in this class prior to January 11 1991 must obtain the proper license by April 1 1992 or when the current license expires whichever occurs first.

Physical Requirements: Incumbents must be able to perform heavy manual labor including digging ditches and lifting carrying pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds unassisted and in excess of 100 pounds with the aid of helpers.

Note: Candidates must be able and willing to work at considerable elevations over land or water. Including working from suspended scaffolds in all kinds of weather and under hazardous conditions. Incumbents are subject to emergency or on-call work at other than normal duty hours.

Note: Failure to maintain the appropriate valid California Drivers license constitutes cause for termination from the class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4.

Probationary Period

The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)


All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.


This examination will evaluate the relevance level recency progression and quality of candidates education training and experience. The candidates application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore the candidates responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.


All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
