Summary of Job Duties:
Position Summary:The Livestock Specialist provides technical expertise training and outreach support for livestock production systems including beef cattle dairy goats sheep and swine. The position supports the universitys extension and research mission by assisting producers with best management practices improving animal health and productivity and delivering educational programs to farmers youth and community stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Extension and Outreach
oDeliver educational workshops field days and demonstrations on livestock production and management.
oProvide one-on-one technical assistance to farmers and ranchers.
oDevelop fact sheets training materials and extension publications.
oCollaborate with county extension agents and agricultural organizations.
2. Research Support
oAssist faculty with applied livestock research projects.
oCollect and analyze production data related to nutrition breeding and animal health; as well as help manage university livestock herds and demonstration farms.
3. Producer Support
Advise producers on:
oNutrition and feeding programs Breeding and reproductive management
oHerd-health and Biosecurity Pasture and forage management
oMarketing and farm profitability
4. Youth and Student Engagement
Support youth livestock programs such as MANRRS and 4 H Organization activities.
Mentor undergraduate students in animal science and agricultural programs.
Assist with student livestock projects and judging teams.
5. Program Development
Identify emerging issues affecting livestock producers.
Develop new extension initiatives to improve regional livestock production.
Evaluate program impact and report outcomes to stakeholders and funding agencies.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in animal science Agriculture or related field (masters degree is often preferred).
Knowledge of livestock production systems (beef dairy small ruminants or swine).
Experience with producer education extension programs or farm management.
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to farms and rural communities.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in animal science Agriculture or related field (Ph.D. degree is often preferred).
Experience working with limited resources or underserved farmers.
Grant writing or program development experience.
Knowledge of livestock record systems and herd management software.
Work Environment
Combination of farm classrooms office and field environments.
Travel to farms ranches and extension offices.
Occasional evening and weekend programs.
