Description

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe and compliant work environment. This role involves developing safety policies conducting training performing inspections and ensuring adherence to all relevant health and safety regulations. The Safety Coordinator works closely with management and employees to reduce risks prevent accidents and foster a culture of safety. Work performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Human Resources with a dotted-line reporting into the DPW Director.

Essential Functions

  • Develop implement and maintain workplace safety programs and procedures to ensure compliance with local state and federal safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of facilities equipment and work sites.
  • Identify hazards and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
  • Assist with incident investigations and prepare detailed reports as required.
  • Responsible for ordering personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain records of safety training and compliance documentation.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of health and safety training; conduct safety training and onboarding for new employees.
  • Function as Emergency Response Coordinator for the Department of Public Works; serve on the DPW Health and Safety Committee to provide guidance and assistance on safety and health.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 3 years proven experience in a safety-related role.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in occupational safety and health or related field preferred.
  • Certification such as OSHA CSP or CHST is a plus.
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL A) is a plus.
Special Requirements:
  • Valid drivers license in the State of Michigan.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

The Safety Coordinators essential functions require both office and fieldwork environments. Work requires occasional exertion of force/lifting 25-50lbs; regularly requires sitting bending reaching hand dexterity (grasping holding keyboarding repetitive movements) use of ladder confined space entry reading writing eye-hand coordination seeing (near and/or far color depth field of vision) hearing using the telephone contact with government officials and the general public working nights or weekends as necessary. Work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) exposure to the risk of electrical shock and will be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
