The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is a diverse state agency dedicated to the safety health and security of Washingtons workers. Insurance Services is the largest division within the agency and administers one of the premier workers compensation organizations in the nation serving over 3.8 million employees working for 260000 employers.


Within the Third Party Unit in the Insurance Services Division you will provide leadership and supervision to staff that process Third Party recoveries for settlement. The successful candidate will analyze cases and plan coordinate and supervise the activities of the unit consisting of lower level workers compensation adjudicators (WCA4s and WCA5s) and support staff. You will also provide the technical oversight to ensure the recoveries meet statutory requirements. Another important part of this opportunity will be to make recommendations to your supervisor to support continual process and outcome improvements.

Duties

Some of what youll do:

  • Analyze cases and provide direction for staff to make third party recoveries.
  • Supervise and support a professional staff.
  • Facilitate distribution of work activities and staff work assigned.
  • Direct unit staff to process and conduct initial case reviews of settlement request. Educate unit staff on the law and policy and provide ongoing training to develop skill.
  • Primary responsibility for developing and delivering staff training of subrogation in the Third Party Section of the Legal Services Program.
  • Provide daily technical legal assistance to staff working on settlement agreements and offer sophisticated analysis of settlement potential on case by case basis.
  • In consultation with the program manager reviews and makes timely final decisions on extremely difficult and controversial cases where there is difference of opinion between two high level staff of equal status.
  • Seek permission from program manager on whether to pursue litigation on all matters.
  • Build and maintain a working relationship with external customers with whom this position will be required to interact frequently including injured workers and employers and/or their attorneys the Office of the Attorney General (AGO) Personal Injury Attorneys Insurance Adjusters Mediators and the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA) and others.
  • Engage in active discussion with the parties to negotiate settlement agreements and perform a sophisticated analysis of the variables involved in settling a third party case.

Qualifications

Required:


One (1) year of experience as a Workers Compensation Adjudicator 5 AND Five (5) years of experience in adjudicating workers or crime victims compensation insurance claims or adjudication of time loss payments. (or Successful completion of the Department of Labor and Industries Workers Compensation Adjudicator 2 Apprenticeship program)


OR


Two (2) years of experience as a Workers Compensation Adjudicator 4 AND Five (5) years of experience in adjudicating workers or crime victims compensation insurance claims or adjudication of time loss payments. (or Successful completion of the Department of Labor and Industries Workers Compensation Adjudicator 2 Apprenticeship program)


OR


Bachelors degree in business administration public administration or closely allied field AND Five (5) years of experience in adjudicating workers or crime victims compensation insurance claims or adjudication of time loss payments.


AND


The ability to take action to learn and grow.

The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.


**Additional experience working with insurance claims claims/insurance adjusting claims investigations disability management claims risk management/loss control medical billing medical insurance paralegal personal injury services or paramedical occupations will substitute year for year for required education.


**Above Experience must include one year of training management leading teams or supervising.
