OCCs ARC program provides educational accommodations academic counseling and Educational Assistance Classes to students with disabilities so that they can have full and equitable access to the community college experience.Summary10. Prepares periodic reports in compliance with College and funding authority requirements on program activity.
Provides services that enhance disabled students access to and participation in academic and student life activities. Provides and/or arranges for mobility access notetaking tutoring adaptive/assistive technology communication access and testing support services.
Distinguishing Career Features
The Disability Services Associate is in a career ladder designed for program support to students with disabilities. Advancement requires compliance with the job qualifications including three years as an Associate the ability to perform the essential functions of the position and demonstrate ability to assess learning disabilities perform substantive instructional support use of assisted devices and advocacy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties as assigned:
1. May accommodate Proctors for disabled students by scheduling and proctoring tests preparing or arranging for modifications of testing instruments to enhance students ability to complete tests.
2. May proctor exams following instructor directions and requirements allowing for accommodation/modification and maintaining proper security and privacy.
3. May serve as note-takers readers and other services to assist disabled students in classrooms laboratories and other learning environments.
4. May act as liaison regarding student accommodations with faculty proctors facilities and other college departments as needed.
5. Prepares and/or modifies from instructors copy exams and homework that accommodate disabled students using specialized computer-aided software.
6. Documents activities of the office including but not limited to calls attendance walk-in visits tests tutoring and counseling.
7. Compiles summaries and statistics on reasonable accommodations provided to students. Prepares charts and illustrations describing level types patterns and trends of activity.
8. Provides information to and assists students with on-and-off campus registration. Provides for and/or coordinates accommodations that enhance physically and learning disabled students access to curriculum services and facilities. Arranges for accommodations that enable and encourage disabled students to participate in curricular co-curricular and social activities that relate to the students enrollment and are part of student life.
9. Serves as a resource for disabled students to make connections for resources and services that can help enhance self-confidence and contribute to student engagement.
11. Participates in the recruitment and selection of students temporary help and volunteers that provide accommodation tutoring and support to disabled students.
12. May attend community presentations and meetings to give information about the program and the Colleges capabilities to prospective students.
13. Assist with the distribution of adaptive equipment including inventory to multiple sites for disabled student use.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
15. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 Code of Professional Ethics.Qualifications and Physical Demands

Knowledge and Skills
1. The position requires working knowledge of programs resources regulations and laws encompassing disabled students.
2. Requires basic knowledge of and skill at recognizing the various forms of disabilities and potential accommodations.
3. Requires knowledge of alternative teaching and learning methods and media for disabled students.
4. Requires working knowledge of personal computers and common office productivity software.
5. Requires sufficient language and math skills to do basic pre-college tutoring.
6. Requires sufficient writing skills to prepare correspondence and reports.
7. Requires business math skills sufficient compute totals percentages quotients products and ratios.
8. Requires sufficient human relations skill to convey technical concepts to students exercise extreme patience make contact with outside agencies and employers and sell the services.
Abilities
1. Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.
2. Requires the ability to learn and apply regulations governing access and accommodation such as but not limited to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act Americans with Disabilities Act and Title V.
3. Must be able to maintain the learning or simulation lab and equipment in a safe and organized manner.
4. Requires the ability to instruct students in the use of learning assistance equipment and programs.
5. Requires the ability to perform routine record keeping and report writing duties.
6. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of records and files. Must be able to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively.
7. Must be able to communicate in both formal and informal setting with students instructors and other interested parties.
8. Must be able to demonstrate a sensitivity to persons with disabilities and varying socioeconomic cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
9. Must be able to coordinate the activities of work-study students temporary employees and volunteers.
10. May require the ability to perform work assignments at all College locations.
Physical Abilities

Education and Experience
Associates degree in a social or behavioral science ancillary health profession or equivalent discipline. A Bachelors is preferred and may substitute for experience. Or any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.AND

Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial ethnic disability gender identity sexual orientation socioeconomic academic and cultural diversity within the community college student population including students with different ability statuses (e.g. physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
May require a valid driver license.

This is an IN-HOUSE ONLY - permanent categorically funded full-time 12-months per year classified position. The District reserves the right to extend modify or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends if necessary to meet the departments needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical dental and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. (Salary Schedule: EE-115)

Pay Philosophy:

Selection Procedure
