Duties and Responsibilities

(Note:** denotes Essential functions)

  • **Coordinate and Administer a Post Approval Monitoring (PAM) process for each program. Review and comprehend biosafety registrations human and animal use protocols prior to conducting post-approval monitoring audits to ensure the description of ongoing activity is reflected pursuant to approved documentation. Schedule and coordinate on-site audits for biosafety human and animal use prepare post-approval monitoring reports for IBC IRB and IACUC consideration and follow up to ensure corrective actions are taken as required.

  • **Organize coordinate and investigate complaints and situations of alleged significant non-compliance following post-approval monitoring audits independent of the IBC IRB and IACUC.

  • Attend conferences and workshops to keep abreast of developments in biosafety human and animal research use on emerging technologies and science regulations and policy. Must consider implementation of learned material. Dependent on availability of funding.

  • **Primary back-up to the IBC Coordinator. by providing primary administrative and regulatory support to the Biosafety Program by managing business meetings and committee activities. Communicate and advise faculty and students of processing IBC registrations.

  • **Serve as Fish Advisory Committee (FAC) Coordinator by providing administrative and regulatory support to the Animal Welfare Program by conducting inspections with members of FAC at locations housing aquatic species not limited to University sites.

  • **Primary back-up to the IACUC Coordinator. Administrative and regulatory support to the Human Studies and Animal Welfare Program assisting with business meetings and committee activities. Communicate and advise faculty and students of processing IRB and IACUC protocols.

  • **Support Biosafety Program Human Studies Program and Animal Welfare Program by helping to ensure research testing management and instruction activities are compliant with regulations meets expectations of industry standards and implements institutional procedures and policies.

  • Other Duties as Assigned


Minimum Qualifications
Education and Professional Work Experience:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Biological Social and/or Technological Sciences or related field and 4 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for research administration or research management; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of biological social and/or technological sciences as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.

  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with biological and/or technological sciences.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

  • For supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.

  • Knowledge of the principles of biosafety and vertebrate animal use as it relates to research and teaching/training activities in a University environment.

  • Knowledge of the methods materials procedures and techniques used in programs that require biosafety principals and human/vertebrate animal use in laboratory and field research and instruction.

  • Knowledge of federal state and local laws and regulations industry expectations and guidelines and University of Hawaii policies and procedures governing biosafety principles and human/animal use in research testing management and instruction.


Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous experience in providing educational training and effecting compliance with either or both Biosafety Human Studies and/or Animal Welfare Programs a research university government environment or for profit organization (biotechnology or pharmaceutical company).
  • Juris Doctor degree
