Job Summary

Job Title: Schutte Machine Operator Level 2
Job Status: Full-time Employee Non-Exempt Hourly
Department: Operations
Reports To: Operations Manager / Manufacturing Engineer
Position Summary
The Schutte Machine Operator (Level 2) is an experienced production operator responsible for independently running Schutte multi-spindle machines with minimal supervision. This role builds on foundational machine knowledge to deliver consistent output maintain part quality perform basic adjustments and actively support the Setup Technician team. The Level 2 Operator is a dependable contributor on the shop floor who demonstrates ownership of their machine and is developing the skills needed to progress toward a setup technician role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Machine Operation
  • Independently operate one or more Schutte multi-spindle machines during production runs to meet scheduled output targets
  • Monitor machine performance throughout the shift recognizing normal versus abnormal conditions and responding appropriately
  • Load bar stock verify material against the job traveler and maintain uninterrupted production flow
  • Perform minor in-process adjustments (such as tool offsets or coolant flow) within authorized parameters; escalate larger issues to the Setup Technician
  • Execute shift start-up and shutdown procedures for assigned machines according to established standards
  • Communicate machine status downtime events and production pace clearly to the supervisor and setup team
  • Assist the Setup Technician during changeovers including tooling prep chip clearing and workstation staging
Machine Care & Floor Ownership
  • Take ownership of assigned machine cleanliness chip removal and general upkeep throughout the shift
  • Monitor coolant concentration and oil levels; replenish as needed and document any significant changes
  • Identify and promptly report mechanical issues unusual sounds or equipment wear to the Setup Technician or Maintenance
  • Maintain the assigned work area to 6S standards at all times including end-of-shift cleanup
  • Handle finished parts scrap and raw material properly to prevent damage mixing or contamination
Quality & Inspection
  • Perform regular in-process inspections using micrometers calipers and gauges per the control plan or work instructions
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints to verify key dimensions and part features during production
  • Identify tag and quarantine nonconforming parts; complete required documentation and notify the quality team
  • Support first-piece approval activities by providing accurate inspection data to the Setup Technician
  • Record production counts scrap and downtime accurately on job travelers and production logs each shift
  • Raise quality concerns proactively rather than waiting for defects to accumulate
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all plant safety rules LOTO procedures and PPE requirements without exception
  • Report unsafe conditions near misses or injuries to the supervisor immediately
  • Participate in safety training toolbox talks and incident investigations as required
  • Serve as a positive example of safe behavior for Level 1 Operators on the floor
Continuous Improvement & Team Support
  • Actively support 6S initiatives and maintain assigned areas to established visual standards
  • Participate in kaizen events and contribute observations from day-to-day machine operation
  • Assist in onboarding and guiding Level 1 Operators sharing knowledge of machine operation and shop expectations
  • Identify and communicate improvement ideas related to safety quality efficiency or workstation organization
  • Actively pursue skill development to progress toward Level 3 / Setup Technician responsibilities

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in a production machining or manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to operate production machinery independently and safely
  • Ability to use basic precision measurement tools including micrometers calipers and go/no-go gauges
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and understand key dimensions and tolerances
  • Strong attention to detail with a consistent focus on producing conforming parts
  • Good communication skills; ability to clearly report machine status quality issues and production progress
  • Reliable self-motivated and able to manage workstation responsibilities with minimal direction
  • Ability to work flexible shifts and overtime as production needs require
  • Unwavering commitment to safety and established procedures
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience operating Schutte ACME or other multi-spindle screw machines
  • Familiarity with cam-driven machining cycles and basic machine controls
  • Experience assisting with setups or changeovers in a machining environment
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing 5S/6S or structured quality systems
  • Experience using ERP or MRP systems to record production data
  • Vocational or technical training in machining manufacturing technology or a related field
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods on a concrete shop floor
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without assistance
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise coolant oil and metal chips
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions associated with machine operation part handling and inspection tasks
