The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Nome Alaska!


What you will be doing:
This position serves as a crew member at salmon counting projects at field camps throughout Norton Sound from approximately mid-June to mid-September each year. The primary duties of this position are to record hourly salmon passage by species capture salmon using weir traps and beach seines to collect biological data and to maintain field facilities and equipment in a remote setting. Additionally this position may assist in sampling commercial harvests of salmon and red king crab.

The data collected at salmon counting projects is essential for the management of local Norton Sound commercial fisheries. The weekly schedule includes regular daily shifts and overtime with recreational opportunities such as fishing and berry picking.

The working environment you can expect:
The Norton Sound is an area of pristine salmon spawning streams located in remote settings. The daily work environment involves counting salmon capturing salmon for biological samples and occasionally boating/operating ATVs to travel. Staff lives in private wall tents while in field camps and may stay in bunkhouses in Nome and Unalakleet when in town. Requires operation of skiffs and ATVs to travel to project sites. May require travel in small aircraft fixed wing or rotary. Also requires training for the safe handling and operation of firearms in bear country.

Who we are looking for:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
The ideal candidate will be familiar with the challenges of living and working in remote locations for extended periods of time. Adapting to dynamic river conditions to accomplish project objectives is an essential ability for the successful applicant. Experience operating and maintaining skiffs ATVs and field gear and equipment is desirable. Skills in capturing handling and sampling live salmon and/or crab are also a plus.

  • Valid Drivers License is required.

  • This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.


Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
