Position Overview
This onsite role oversees daily operations of the Metrology Lab leading high-precision measurement activities that support high-volume medical device manufacturing. The Metrology Supervisor drives CT metrology workflow for non-destructive inspection manages calibration strategy (in-house and outsourced) ensures inspection programming and equipment readiness (CMM and other automated systems) and maintains audit-ready documentation in alignment with GDP and FDA QMSR requirements. This position partners cross-functionally with Manufacturing Quality Engineering and customers to support NPIs validate test methods and resolve measurement-related issues through robust investigations and corrective actions.
High Level Roles & Responsibilities
- Lab Management: Oversee the daily operations of the Metrology Lab including optimization of lab layout and environmental controls for high-precision measurement.
- CT Metrology Leadership: Lead implementation and workflow of the Industrial CT Scanner for non-destructive inspection internal defect analysis and CAD-to-part comparisons. Oversee programming and maintenance of Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and other automated inspection equipment to support high-volume medical production.
- Calibration Strategy: Manage the calibration team to ensure both in-house and outsourced calibration schedules are maintained without disrupting manufacturing deadlines or come with solutions should there be disruptions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure lab activities and documentation meet GDP (Good Documentation Practice) and comply with FDA QMSR requirements maintaining audit-ready status.
- OOT Investigations: Supervise out-of-tolerance (OOT) investigations and conduct measurement error problem-solving analysis to implement robust corrective actions.
- New Client Onboarding: Support project management for new product introductions (NPI) by coordinating Test Method Validations (TMV) and GRR studies for new client inspection protocols.
- Team Development: Facilitate technical training for Metrology Technicians on new technologies (CT/CMM) and quality-related programs.
- Equipment Strategy: Research and manage acquisition and implementation of next-generation metrology equipment to keep Kimball Medical Solutions at the forefront of the industry.
Skills to Perform This Role
Technical Skills
- Advanced Metrology: Expert ability to operate and program CMM (Zeiss Calypso preferred) and industrial CT scanning systems.
- GD&T Proficiency: Deep understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to read and interpret complex technical drawings and CAD models.
- Tooling Expertise: Mastery of inspection equipment including calipers micrometers height gages and optical/vision systems.
- Validation: Strong ability to lead and document TMV (Test Method Validation) and equipment qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ).
Leadership & Business Skills
- Project Management: Ability to manage time and projects effectively while setting and meeting aggressive schedules for new facility ramp-up.
- Change Management: Willingness and ability to lead a team through changes to processes and site transition.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills to interact with all levels of the organization and conduct professional plant tours for prospective medical clients.
Education/Experience
- Education: BA or higher degree in Engineering (Mechanical Electrical Biomedical) or equivalent experience.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Specific knowledge of ISO 13485 and the FDA Quality Management System Regulation (QMSR).
- Experience: 5 years in quality or related engineering fields with at least 2 years in a metrology/inspection environment.
- Management: 1 years of experience managing people or departments in a regulated manufacturing setting.
Key Performance Objectives
Short Term: (0 to 3 months)
Establish daily operating rhythm for the Metrology Lab (safety environmental controls workflow housekeeping and priorities).
Review current calibration schedules (in-house and outsourced) critical equipment list and coverage plan to avoid manufacturing disruptions.
Assess CMM programs fixtures and automated inspection capabilities; confirm readiness for production support and priorities for improvement.
Learn Kimballs QMS and Kimballs culture.
Midterm: (3 to 6 months)
Implement and stabilize Industrial CT scanning workflow (training scheduling data handling and standard work) to support production and engineering needs.
Drive TMV and GRR execution for new and existing inspection methods; ensure protocols and records meet customer and regulatory expectations.
Lead OOT investigations and measurement error problem-solving; implement corrective actions and trend recurring issues to prevent escapes.
Long Term: 6-12 months
Maintain sustained audit-ready lab operations through robust GDP practices and alignment to QMSR/ISO 13485 requirements.
Build and execute a skills/training plan for Metrology Technicians (CT CMM GD&T interpretation validations and documentation expectations).
Establish and deliver an equipment roadmap (upgrades new acquisitions and obsolescence plans) to expand inspection capability and support future customer requirements.
Partner with Quality and Engineering to ensure measurement system issues are appropriately documented and driven to closure (NCR/CAPA support as applicable).
