Job Summary:
The Assistant Principal for Student Affairs is a vital figure in shaping a supportive and disciplined environment conducive to students academic personal and spiritual growth within the framework of Catholic values and the mission of Divine Child High School. Collaborating closely with the Principal School Life Team and faculty and staff they oversee various facets of student life including but not limited to: attendance and discipline school safety student support student and parent communication. This role demands strong leadership communication and interpersonal skills as well as a deep commitment to promoting the holistic development of students in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic faith. The Assistant Principal reports directly to the Principal of Divine Child High School and ultimately the Pastor of the Church of the Divine Child.

Essential Job Functions:
Catholic Identity
  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission vision and core beliefs of Divine Child High School
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of Jesus Christ
  • Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of Detroit
  • Attends Catholic liturgical ceremonies (as required)
  • Collaborates with the Pastor Principal and Director of Campus Ministry in integrating the Catholic Faith and culture into the schools entire program
Organization and Institutional Leadership
  • Manages the general operations of the school in the absence of the Principal
  • Collaborates with the School Life Team (Principal Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs Athletic Director Director of Campus Ministry Assistant Director of Athletics & Student Life and Counseling Department Leader) the Student Formation Coordinator and the Operations Team in the daily functions of the school
  • Collaborates as needed with the Assistant Director of Athletics and Student Life in the management of student leadership (Student Council Link Crew student activities etc.)
  • Supervises and collaborates as needed with the Student Formation Coordinator in the management of student behavior
  • Assists in implementing instructional assessment supervisory and disciplinary standards and monitoring progress towards school goals
  • Assists in planning and coordinating orientations for new parents and students and faculty
  • Assists in the planning of faculty/ staff meetings
  • Serves on school teams including but not limited to Department Leaders Grade Level Leaders Safety and Security Cafeteria and Food Service Enrollment and Retention Administrative Assistants and School Improvement (Cognia accreditation)
  • Assists in planning of in-service programs for faculty and staff
  • Assists in planning the school calendar and bell schedule(s)
  • Supervises field trip requests and adherence to safety/permission slip protocol
  • Oversees collection and management of student health/medical data in collaboration with the school nurse
  • Serves as lead administrator for the Academic Mentoring Program
  • Coordinates annual Graduation Ceremony and practice
  • Serves as liaison between DCHS and Advancement for the planning of Discovery Day
  • Attends Parent-Teacher Conferences as well as other student and parent meetings and programs (as required)
  • Participates in meetings for the AOD Office of Catholic Schools as needed
Student Conduct/Discipline
  • Coordinates and maintains policies for the Student/Parent Handbook and ensures that all policies are in line with the schools mission and vision
  • Supervises accountability to the student discipline system and code of conduct and issuance of behavior contracts
  • Sets high standards for student behavior that are based on Catholic values
  • Sets clear and fair guidelines for student conduct and applies them in a consistent and judicious manner
  • Supervises policies and procedures for the school-wide detention system
  • Keeps complete and accurate student disciplinary records in the PowerSchool SIS and other documentation systems
  • Assists teachers with student behavioral problems as requested and supports teachers in their attempts to implement school conduct policies in classrooms
  • Effectively manages student/student conflict student/teacher conflicts and parent/teacher conflicts and involves counseling team as needed
  • Conducts student and/or parent conferences related to discipline matters and keeps accurate and complete notes
  • Confers with and recommends to the Principal required withdrawal of a student from the school for disciplinary reasons
  • Monitors trends in student behavior and collaborates with the School Life Team to develop interventions as needed
Attendance/School Safety & Security
  • Supervision of accurate attendance records in PowerSchool SIS for all students
  • Oversees student attendance policy accountability and issuance of attendance contracts
  • Oversees the functions of the Attendance Office and supervises the Attendance Administrative Assistant
  • Monitors trends in student attendance and collaborates with the School Life Team to develop interventions as needed
  • Serves as a member of the DCCS Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) Team
  • Coordinates and updates the DCHS Emergency Management Guide & security policies
  • Oversees and updates emergency protocols including scheduling and executing monthly emergency drills (ALICE Fire Tornado Evacuation etc.)
  • Oversees and updates emergency management systems (Raptor Verkada Securly etc.)
  • Serves as the primary liaison between DCHS and the Dearborn Police and Fire Departments and the School Resource Officer
  • Cooperates with civil authorities to the extent required by Michigan law in cases of student involvement with legal violations and/or student welfare
Supervision and Instructional Leadership
  • Routinely observes and provides verbal and/or written feedback to faculty and staff in accordance with the guidelines set by the Principal using classroom observation student and parent experiences and general observation
  • Assists with the formal faculty evaluation/classroom observation process
  • Manages the student supervisory functions of the Cafeteria and oversees the Cafeteria Duty Monitor and Lunch Duty Monitors.
  • Shares responsibility for the supervision of students for out-of-school functions (dances athletic events etc.) where administrative support is expected (as required)
Communication
  • Oversees daily announcements
  • Prepares communication to be shared with students parents faculty and staff via the REMIND messaging system and Schoology
Other
  • Effectively delegates responsibilities and fosters shared leadership
  • Embraces a growth mindset and openness to change growth and continuous improvement while accepting constructive criticism and suggestions
  • Refrains from gossip or negative talk among colleagues maintaining confidentiality and actively building up colleagues students and the larger Divine Child communit
  • Positively collaborates with colleagues parents and students exercising good judgment in all interactions and demonstrating cultural respect and understanding
While a conscientious effort has been made to include all the duties and expectations the above is not all inclusive and the positions duties may be expanded or modified at the discretion of the Pastor or Principal.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelors or masters degree in education or education related field.
  • At least two years of successful teaching experience.
  • Michigan DOE Certification or actively pursuing certification for educational administration and supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Effective collaboration with various stakeholders including school employees coaches parents and representatives of other agencies.
  • Strong organizational skills ability to multitask work independently and make responsible judgment calls.

  • Available for evening and weekend events throughout the school year.

  • Ability to sit stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to move about the campus including climbing stairs and navigating outdoor areas.

  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm motions such as typing and writing.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to supervise students and staff and respond quickly to situations.
