Position Overview
The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for all perioperative and surgical department functions. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality patient-centered surgical care through effective staffing financial management regulatory compliance and performance improvement initiatives. The Director oversees surgical services operations while fostering a culture of accountability collaboration and excellence aligned with organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Services Leadership & Operations
- Oversee OR Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Same Day Surgery PACU Endoscopy and scheduling/analyst teams
- Manage staffing models workflow efficiency and departmental operations
- Supervise 3 managers and approximately 46 FTEs
Quality & Clinical Excellence
- Ensure adherence to evidence-based surgical care practices and clinical standards
- Maintain compliance with regulatory accreditation and licensing requirements
- Monitor equipment maintenance and surgical readiness standards
- Improve patient throughput and perioperative efficiency
Patient Experience & Service Excellence
- Lead initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and perioperative experience
- Promote consistent high-quality patient interactions across surgical services
- Utilize feedback and performance metrics to implement service improvements
Team Leadership & Workforce Development
- Build and sustain a high-performing surgical services team
- Recruit develop and retain clinical and administrative talent
- Provide coaching performance feedback and professional development opportunities
- Foster engagement accountability and alignment with organizational values
Financial & Operational Management
- Participate in annual budgeting and financial planning processes
- Manage staffing supply chain equipment utilization and operational expenses
- Monitor budget performance and implement cost-control strategies
- Ensure efficient labor management and productivity optimization
Strategic Growth & Collaboration
- Collaborate with physicians and executive leadership to expand surgical service lines
- Identify opportunities for service growth and innovation
- Support adoption of new technologies and surgical advancements including robotics
- Align departmental strategy with organizational goals and performance initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree required (Nursing preferred)
- Masters Degree preferred
- Minimum 3 years of acute care surgical services experience required
- Minimum 1 year of recent Director or Manager-level Surgical Services leadership experience required
