We are looking for a high school freshman sophomore junior or senior enrolled in a high school or a recognized public charter vocational correspondence home or private school program to join our team for the 2026 summer.
THE BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR TEAM
This position will teach a high school intern the different duties associated with the Streets & Fleet Maintenance Division. Participating in the internship program will give the incumbent exposure to multiple career paths.
The Streets & Fleet Maintenance intern will provide hands-on roadway and vehicle/equipment maintenance with CBJ Streets and Fleet personnel. The Streets and Fleet intern will gain working knowledge of the maintenance of CBJ roadways and vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs. Working with the Streets crew the intern will work side by side with the Streets maintenance crews learning the many facets of summer roadway maintenance projects. Working on the Fleet side the summer intern will work with mechanics learning the skill of equipment repairs and diagnostics. This position is regularly scheduled 7:00a.m. 3:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. on a rotational basis. This position reports each day to the CBJ Streets & Fleet Maintenance facility located at 7100 Glacier Hwy. Incumbents must have reliable transportation.
Typical Responsibilities
Working with the Streets crew the intern will work side by side with the Streets Maintenance crews learning the many facets of summer roadway maintenance projects. The intern will develop an understanding and direct experience interacting with the Streets crews in general knowledge of the field e.g. pothole patching sign maintenance ditching grading vegetation management and asphalt/paving etc.. Learning the general knowledge of the proper use of power tools and proper maintenance.
Working on the Fleet side the summer intern will work with mechanics learning the skill of equipment repairs and diagnostics. The intern will develop an understanding and experience interacting with the Fleet crew in general knowledge of the field e.g. troubleshooting changing out parts and general maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Internship I- (Range 1)$12.66 per hour
Education: Proof of enrollment in high school or a recognized public charter vocational correspondence home or private school program; in a curriculum appropriate to the intern training and a written recommendation from the high school academic counselor or work experience coordinator.
Experience: None
Note:Appointment to an Intern job class level is at the judgment of the employing department based on the interns academic standing and relevancy of curricula and accumulated experience.
High School Internship II- (Range 5)$16.41 per hour
Education: Proof of enrollment at the Senior class standing level in a high school or a recognized public charter vocational correspondence home or private school program in a curriculum appropriate to the desired program area and the written recommendation of the high school academic counselor or work experience coordinator.
Experience: None
Note:Appointment to an Intern job class level is at the judgment of the employing department based on the interns academic standing and relevancy of curricula and accumulated experience.
Supplemental Information
This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates qualifications. If hired at the lower level the successful applicant will be promoted to the higher level upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the higher level completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work as determined by the supervisor.
