Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
The Masonry Carpenter performs skilled carpentry and masonry work and is responsible for repairs alterations and redesign of interior and exterior wood and stonework elements of County buildings and facilities. This position requires on call duty on a rotating weekly basis twenty-four hours per day.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports directly to the Operations & Maintenance Supervisor and/or the Operations & Maintenance Associate Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position is not responsible for the supervision of other employees. May instruct and oversee the work of other personnel providing assistance with jobs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Receives work and job orders for carpentry repair installation or other maintenance work with partitions floors ceilings doors windows screens and/or cabinets bookcases desks tables and other office furniture.
Makes repairs and/or alterations including constructing and/or installing additions and partition walls paneling doors window frames and screens furnishings trim and other structural and related items.
Fixes in place with nails screws adhesive and other joining techniques and uses wood composite synthetic and other materials depending on purpose of item nature of material users preferences stock availability and related issues. Installs and repairs suspended ceilings.
Receives work and job orders for masonry repair installation or other maintenance work with concrete paths sidewalks steps trims and other items. Breaks up old concrete and forms area for new material mixes and pours new cement and finishes repair of new area.
Installs and repairs or replaces ceramic and other floor and wall tiles. Removes damaged or loose tiles and prepares surface. Uses adhesive to attach new or replacement tiles or other materials.
Determines materials needed for jobs checking against supplies. Secures materials and equipment for each job and coordinates schedule for job performance with other building personnel and those in affected area.
Follows standard safety practices including safeguarding building users visitors or residents. Removes and reinstalls related hardware fixtures and cleans up tools and surrounding area while job is in progress and after completion.
Uses hand and power tools including hand and table saws planers routers radial arm saw sanders lathes and sharpers jackhammers and heavy equipment. Finishes job to ensure conformance to requirements codes and accepted trade standards.
May keep records of jobs performed materials used and related information. May instruct and oversee the work of other personnel providing assistance with jobs.
Assists other trades personnel and/or performs such maintenance work including work other than structural equipment and mechanical systems repairs.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE- Completion of a high school or general equivalency diploma;AND
Specialized training in masonry or general carpentry maintenance or repair work is preferred;AND
At least three (3) years of carpentry work including substantial involvement in masonry work required;AND
Must possess and maintain a valid and current motor vehicle operators license with an acceptable driving record.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION As a post-offer prerequisite for appointment appointees must pass a motor vehicle driving record check.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of carpentry principles practices methods and techniques commonly employed in the repair alteration and installation of building and furnishing fixtures and parts.
Thorough knowledge of masonry principles practices methods and techniques employed in the repair alteration and installation of stonework concrete ceramic materials and related elements.
Thorough knowledge of the tools substances and safety precautions of the carpentry and masonry trades.
Skill in the use and maintenance of carpentry and masonry tools and materials.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to lift carry and maneuver into position lumber drywall paneling furnishings concrete forms and other heavy and/or unwieldy fixtures.
Ability to work in close proximity to nursing facility patients families and visitors if required by work assignment.
Ability to read write speak understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds.
