Park Maintenance Worker


Yamhill County has one regular full-time position for a Park Maintenance Worker. This position directs and participates in manual labor semi-skilled work in the maintenance construction and repair of county parks boat ramp facilities grounds and equipment. Perform general park maintenance activities in all weather conditions. Performs related work as required.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Parks Manager and Public Works Director.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervision of other employees is not usually a responsibility of this classification other than assigned seasonal staff and adults required to perform community service.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITIONS ASSIGNED TO THIS CLASSIFICATION. DEPENDING ON ASSIGNMENT THE EMPLOYEE MAY PERFORM A COMBINATION OF SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DUTIES:
Constructs picnic tables benches fire pits restrooms etc.
Cleans Park facilities picks up trash cleans and stock restrooms collects and hauls garbage and cleans fire pits.
Maintains and repairs park water systems.
Repairs vandalized park facilities such as signs fences restroom fixtures lights benches picnic tables fire pits and boat docks.
Mows turf areas trims bushes shrubs and trees; performs mower maintenance and repair.
Leads and coordinates the work of part-time and community service personnel in park and facilities maintenance activities. Train seasonal and community service workers in the safe operation of tools and equipment.
Operates a variety of equipment such as trucks trailers mowers tractors backpack blowers hedge trimmers chainsaws hand tools and other associated equipment.
Cleans and maintains equipment and work storage areas.
Responds to citizen inquiries and requests.
Performs other related tasks as required.
May be required to attend monthly meetings.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Park and facility maintenance including plant health care turf management general irrigation principles and pesticide application.
Safe operation of park maintenance equipment such as tractors mowers trucks trailers backhoes mini skid steer machines chainsaws backpack blowers hedge trimmers pruners hand tools and other associated equipment.
Basic arithmetic and mathematics principles
Principles and practices of supervision and training.


SKILL IN:
Interpersonal communication.
Use of materials and hand tools used in park maintenance and construction.
Instructing assigned staff in safe operation of tools and equipment.


ABILITY TO:
Attend work as scheduled and/or required including varying shifts and weekends.
Plan conduct and perform the full range of maintenance duties.
Take direction and perform tasks with minimal supervision understanding and following written and oral instructions.

Read equipment instructions maps and blueprints.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors subordinates other county employees and the public.

Minimum Experience and Training/Other Requirements

A High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in park and facility maintenance including the operation of commercial landscape equipment and mowers. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may substitute for the above. Preferred experience includes a certified pesticide applicators license and certified playground safety inspector.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Driving is an essential duty of this position. Must possess a valid drivers license acceptable in the State of Oregon and an acceptable driving record. Will be required to drive a County vehicle. Employees authorized to operate a private vehicle on County business are required to carry a valid drivers license and liability insurance minimums as outlined in ORS 806.070.


May be subject to successful completion of a background check as well as a pre-employment physical and hearing test.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

The incumbent performs field work outdoors up to 90% of the time and uses mechanical equipment as needed to perform duties. Some areas may be exposed to loud noise and require the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hearing protection. Weather conditions may vary. Alternately works in an office environment and uses a computer telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The employee will encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday. While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to work in inclement weather conditions and various conditions pertinent with job-site construction and comply with safety and security requirements e.g. wearing hard hats.


The employee is regularly required to walk sit or stand up to 90% of the time talk or hear 100% of the time frequently required to use repetitive hand motion handle or feel pull push reach crawl stoop knee crouch climb and bend up to 80% of the time. Required to lift up to 20 pounds regularly and 30 pounds occasionally.


Contact with the public risk exposure to irrational/hostile behavior contagious diseases or contact with domestic animals.
