Job Summary
The Koelwyn lab is seeking a full-time Clinical Research Coordinator with experience in clinical exercise physiology who can plan coordinate implement and evaluate clinical research initiatives within the lab and collaborating research labs/institutions. Our lab specifically studies how exercise induces adaptations across the inflammatory-immune axis to improve outcomes in individuals at risk for or diagnosed with cardiopulmonary disease and cancer. The lab is located at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI) which is situated within Providence Health Cares St. Pauls Hospital in downtown Vancouver.

Organizational Status
The UBC Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St. Pauls Hospital brings together basic and clinician scientists in an exciting multidisciplinary environment to address heart lung and critical care disease. The HLI is the largest translational research centre within Providence Health Cares St. Pauls Hospital comprised of 50 Principal Investigators (PIs) of which approximately 40% conduct clinical research and over 300 Scientists and staff. Education is provided to over 130 undergraduate graduate and post-graduate students.


This position is based at HLI within St. Pauls Hospital Division of Respiratory Medicine in a shared office environment.


Work Performed

Plans coordinates implements and evaluates clinical research initiatives within the Koelwyn lab and collaborating research labs/institutions ensuring alignment with study objectives and goals set by the Principal Investigator.
Responsible for the full range of study conduct activities including research proposal and protocol development ethics submissions amendments annual renewals and study set-up maintenance and close-out under the direction of the Principal Investigator.

Manages participant recruitment enrollment randomization and scheduling; ensures compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and obtains patient informed consent.
Ensures compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) obtaining and documenting patient informed consent and handling case management for ongoing follow-up assessments.
Designs develops and manages data collection methodologies instruments and databases; coordinates data and specimen transfer and conducts preliminary data analysis.
Generates progress and interim reports presenting data analysis findings to stakeholders.
Monitors study progress addresses issues related to adverse events and ensures adherence to protocols. Troubleshoots clinical questions or problems affecting patient care providing leadership to resolve these issues.

- Supervises clinical exercise research including collaboration with allied health professionals and clinical exercise physiologists at St. Pauls Hospital. Tasks include overseeing exercise programming across various patient populations as well as supervision and monitoring of clinical exercise team

Provides training supervision and leadership to undergraduate and graduate students and staff in the Koelwyn lab on clinical research study design and conduct.
Prepares and interprets data contributes to manuscript preparation for publication and disseminates research findings through presentations.

Liaise with other PIs clinician-scientists and research labs within the HLI St Pauls Hospital (SPH) industry partners UBC departments and community to develop research partnerships
Supervise and evaluate practicum students

Lack of attention to detail or professionalism during the performance of duties could jeopardize the progress of research activities negatively impacting the productivity and success of the Koelwyn Lab as well as affect the reputation of all researchers participating in the work.

Supervision Received
Works independently under the direction of the Koelwyn Lab Principal Investigator.


Supervision Given
Provides direction to students facility users including scientists trainees and other research staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active CSEP or ACSM CEP (certified exercise physiologist) certification or equivalent with accompanying insurance. It is also the responsibility of the candidate to stay up to date with the requirements of this qualification.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with patients families team members and the community.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position; ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to train and supervise others on study protocols; ability to manage projects within a defined budget and timeline.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail; familiarity with relevant regulations and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Ability to document research processes results and protocols.
