Position: Legal navigation Support Worker Part-Time Temporary
Location: Newton Resource Center
Hours: 21 hours Mon Tue Thu
Salary: $27.81 per hour
Start Date: ASAP
End Date: March 31 2027 (May be extended)
This position is structured as a job share arrangement between two employees. The continuation of this role is dependent on maintaining the job share structure. If the arrangement cannot be sustained (e.g. one partner leaves) the position may be re-evaluated and could be modified or discontinued based on operational requirements.

Sources Newton Resource Centre
The Newton Resource Centre offers a variety of services for individuals who a living in poverty including those who are homeless. These programs focus on supporting individuals to obtain and maintain essential income and living resources including income assistance other government benefits and affordable rental housing. Our Housing Support Services assist individuals who are homeless and at imminent risk of homelessness. This team works collaboratively to address the unique and complex needs of each individual as well as works in partnership with other service providers in the community to address the needs of this target population.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The position will assist in review of individual claim submission process supports and assistance to navigate the refugee claim or appeal process (showing clients where to find accurate information about immigration pathways and refugee claim procedures translating the meaning of a question and transcribing responses on an immigration form and providing information about avoiding immigration fraud Liaising with immigration lawyers and legal aid organizations to provide legal advice to the claimant Assisting claimants in preparing their case by gathering necessary documents and evidence ensuring they are well-prepared for legal proceedings Providing support information and referral written communication on behalf of the client and accompaniment to meetings and hearings and Promote and develop relationships with government agencies and other community service providers.
Responsibilities:
Direct Service:
- Screen and identify Individuals legal issues according to program guidelines and funding mandate.
- Provide emotional support legal resources information and appropriate referrals by telephone website email and appointment.
- Assess client information and determine eligibility for referral to Legal Aid.
- Build and maintain a positive working relationship with other advocates lawyers Legal Service Providers and other relevant groups and individuals.
- Follow-up with lawyers/clients regarding progress/outcome of case.
Administration
- Research current policies and procedures laws and case law etc. to keep current with various client issues.
- Ensure legal resources are kept current.
- Maintain complete and accurate program records and statistics for all program activities.
- Perform related administrative practices including record keeping file management and reporting to accredited standards.

Qualifications:
- Post-Secondary education/or equivalent training and education in Psychology Sociology or a related social services program.
- Two years experience working in a related field.
- Good understanding of Immigration/refugee Law
- Knowledge of community resources and other social service agencies.
- Self-motivated with the ability to run an organized caseload.
- Priority will be given to individuals with one of the following languages: Punjabi Hindi Arabic Dari Pashto Spanish and Tigrinya.
- Must have a valid BC Drivers License and access to a vehicle.
