POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The SLPA works under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) to support students with identified speech and language disorders including students with additional disabilities. The SLPA assists in implementing speech and language services by supporting instruction related to communication skills augmentative and assistive communication devices and systems and therapeutic activities designed to develop pre-language and language skills oral-motor control for speech production and vocalization. Under the direction of the supervising SLP the SLPA helps supplement enhance and extend speech/language therapy services through a variety of student-centered support activities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct speech and language screenings without interpretation using protocols developed by the supervising SLP.
- Provide direct support to students in the areas of speech language voice fluency hearing and communication under the supervision of the SLP.
- Implement and support documented IEPs therapy plans treatment protocols and behavior management programs as designed by certified staff.
- Document and report student performance and progress toward established objectives through data collection charts records graphs and related reports.
- Assist the SLP during assessments by preparing materials supporting formal documentation and performing clerical and organizational duties.
- Prepare adapt modify maintain and organize instructional and therapy materials supplies equipment and assistive technology based on student needs and instructional requirements.
- Support classroom and therapy environments by organizing activities maintaining a clean and orderly learning space and assisting instructional personnel with implementation of student services.
- Observe and report significant student behaviors behavioral patterns and other concerns to the supervising SLP.
- Assist with departmental operations including scheduling record-keeping safety procedures quality improvement data collection in-service training programs and research projects.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable district state and federal regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to develop an understanding of materials and equipment used in the Speech and Language Pathology Program.
- Knowledge of proper English usage spelling grammar and math.
- Ability to gain the confidence of colleagues children and youth assigned to Speech and Language Pathology Program.
- Ability to perform a variety of general education assistance duties.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Knowledge of general child development behavior patterns.
- Ability to effectively apply specialized training/ experience in working with the challenges and needs of students in the program.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates Degree required Bachelors Degree preferred.
- Spanish skills are preferred.
- A combination of education and experience that prepares applicant for this position.
- Current or in-progress certification as a Speech Pathologist Assistant from theWyoming Board of Speech-Pathology and Audiology.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs. 0 - 12 feet and on occasion up to 20 feet such as boxes of books and equipment. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person may need to lift arms to write on chalk or marking board and occasionally stoop kneel crouch and reach 0 - 24 inches and up to 36 inches above the head. The employee is directly responsible for the safety well-being and work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed materialthe ability to adjust focus and exposure to screen(s) via technology. Hearing ability to monitor activity and presence of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is normally low to moderate but may become loud when large groups are together in a room. The employee may be required to move from room to room to provide instruction and may have to maneuver in crowded hallways. Duties are typically performed indoors and occasionally outdoors such as playground duty or when students are boarding or unloading buses. The employee may be exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. This position is typically performed in a hazard free clean and healthy environment.
