The Opportunity

Derby is a city at the heart of the UKs industrial and environmental evolution from its heritage as the birthplace of the factory system to its modern role as a global hub for sustainable aerospace and rail engineering. We are seeking an intellectually curious Geography Teacher to join an Ofsted-rated Outstanding secondary academy. In this role you will inspire students to explore the complex relationship between human activity and the natural world utilising the unique geography of the East Midlandsfrom the urban regeneration of Derby to the rugged landscapes of the nearby Peak District.

The Department & Academic Standard

• You will join a high-performing Humanities faculty where Geography is a premier subject attracting high student numbers at both GCSE and A-Level.

• The department fosters a global-citizen atmosphere encouraging students to engage in high-level debate regarding climate change urbanisation and geopolitical shifts.

• As an Outstanding setting we prioritise a research-led approach to fieldwork employing GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and sophisticated data collection techniques to bring the curriculum to life.

Core Responsibilities

1. Exemplary Instruction: Delivering high-challenge Geography lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 with significant opportunities for A-Level instruction for suitably qualified candidates.

2. Physical Geography Mastery: Teaching the mechanics of the natural world including tectonic hazards glaciated landscapes and the intricacies of the hydrological cycle.

3. Human Geography Insight: Guiding students through global patterns of development the challenges of megacities and the complexities of international trade and migration.

4. Fieldwork Leadership: Designing and leading rigorous local and national fieldwork expeditions ensuring students can apply theoretical models to real-world environments.

5. Geospatial Literacy: Training students to use modern cartographic tools and data analysis software preparing them for the quantitative requirements of higher education.

The Successful Candidate We are looking for a subject authority who can translate global challenges into fascinating classroom insights. Requirements include:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in Geography or a related Environmental Science discipline.

• Proven Track Record: Evidence of delivering exceptional learning outcomes at GCSE and A-Level with a deep understanding of AQA or Edexcel specifications.

• Analytical Rigor: The ability to support students in mastering both the descriptive and the statistical components of the Geography curriculum.

• Inspirational Presence: A teacher who can foster a classroom culture of critical inquiry encouraging students to think like professional geographers and environmentalists.
