MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum five (5) years fire service experience.
- Must reside in Mt. Lebanon within one (1) year after passing a one (1) year probation period.
- Possess Pro-BoardORIFSAC Firefighter II Certification.
- Possess or be able to obtain PA DOH or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and Class B Commercial Drivers License within 12 months of hire.
- Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Completed at least 30 credit hours of post secondary education in any discipline at an accredited college or university.
- Possess a valid drivers license.
- Must be able to acquire a minimum of an associates degree in Fire Science from an accredited institution of higher learning within three (3) years of hire.
- Must be able to obtain Fire Officer I certification and Fire Inspector I within two (2) years of hire.
- Attend the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy Engine Academy I and II within three (3) years of hire.
- Must not use any type of tobacco product through duration of employment.

SELECTION PROCESS
- Written Exam through National Testing Network (NTN).Candidates with a passing score (80% or higher) will be notified and invited to continue to the Physical Agility Test.The Written Examination Score will constitute 50% of the Applicants final score on the Eligibility for Appointment List.Please see below regarding written exam instructions.
- Physical Agility Test. For candidates with a passing score on the written exam the physical agility test will be held onSaturday June 27 2026.The physical agility test is Pass/Fail (unscored). For more detailed information regarding the physical agility test please visit the following link: candidates also have the option of submitting a Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) certification in lieu of the in-person physical agility test. CPAT certification must have been obtained within 12 months from June 27 2025. ( Exam.The top 25 applicants who pass the physical agility test and written exam will be offered an oral exam per civil service rules. The Applicant will be required to demonstrate to the Oral Board a facility for speech to enable communication with individuals of disparate age groups and in varied situations. Passing score for the Oral Exam is seventy-five percent (75%). The Oral Exam score will constitute fifty percent (50%) of the applicants final score on the Eligibility for Appointment List.
- Background Investigation. The background investigation shall be based upon information contained in a Personal History Questionnaire and other information that may be developed during the course of the investigation. The background investigation may include but is not limited to interviews with family associates school officials and employers.
- Pre-Employment Interview:Selected Applicants may be interviewed by the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department Chief prior to recommendations for appointment.
- Conditional Offer of Employment:Selected Applicants will then receive a conditional offer of employment. After a conditional offer of employment is made the conditional appointee is required to submitto a psychological and medical examination.
WRITTEN EXAM INSTRUCTIONS
The Mt. Lebanon Fire Department offers full testing services for the position of Fire Lieutenant through National Testing Network (NTN). National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry level testing in a standardized professional environment. National Testing Network does not replace the Mt. Lebanon Fire Departments responsibility and decision-making in the testing process. All candidate results are provided to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department where the final decisions are made.
To register for the written exam:
- Go to the NTN registration process and schedule a written exam.(There is a $65 test fee payable on-line to NTN).
- Review detailed information about the testing process.
- Review the Frequently Asked Questions and take an online practice test (if desired--there is a separate fee payable to NTN for the practice test).
- Applicants must complete the written exam by 4 p.m. on Wednesday June 17 2026.
Upon completion of your exam scores are forwarded to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department. Candidates who attain a passing score on the exam will be invited to continue to the physical agility test.
