We invite you to apply for an opening with the Jefferson County Coroners Office as a Coroner Investigator I.
Under general supervision of the Coroner and direct supervision of the Chief Deputy Coroner this entry-level position will focus on adapting to office policies and procedures while also adhering to state/federal laws in performing medicolegal death investigations and associated work in a comprehensive manner; involving medicine public health criminal justice and community service; fulfilling the vision of the Coroner mission of the office and related statutory responsibilities.
The work involves conducting comprehensive investigations into deaths researching related facts and producing highlyaccurateinvestigation reports. The Coroner Investigatoris responsible forpronouncing death and notifyingappropriate agenciesand next-of-kinregardingdeaths within theCoronersjurisdiction. The Coroner Investigator is also responsible for drawing andsubmittingtoxicological specimensmaintaininginvestigative equipment and keeping detailed records.
This position may require testifying in court for criminal and civil cases.
SCHEDULE:Schedule will include either three 12-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts.
COMPENSATION:
Hiring Range:$30.57 - $35.00 USD Hourly
Compensation will bedeterminedbased on educationexperienceand skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

General responsibility for conducting death investigationsin accordance withstate/federal laws and office guidelines.
Field phone calls and pages to the office with reports of death.
Field phone calls and pages to the office with reports of death. Establishjurisdictionand determineappropriate courseof action to ensure a thorough comprehensive medicolegal death investigation.Writereports on all cases for legal documentation.
Gathers reviews and analyzesmedical/psychologicalrecords and legal documents; including but not limited to EMS/Police reports toxicology records and autopsy reports and summarizes findings.
Complete positive identification before release ofremains.Identifylegal next-of-kin and make notification of death for county deaths. Consults with families witnesses medical professionalslaw enforcement personnel and others to obtain statements and related evidence. Analyzes information and prepares investigative reports accordingly for legal documentation.
Must be able to obtain x-rays fingerprints DNA swabs and collect toxicology; all must be appropriately packaged. Maintains daily cooler count of each individual body.
Assistswith inventory of supplies toxicology medications and educational activities. Special projects as assigned. Maintains department equipment in a clean and safe working condition.
Maintains continuing education units for the ABMDI or establishes ABMDI certification within the first year of hire.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:Associate of Arts in criminal justice or related fieldand;
Experience:A minimum of one years of death investigation experience.
License/Certifications:Certification (D-ABMDI) with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators iswithin one year of hire.
Language Skills: Ability to read analyze and interpret general technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write concise andaccuratereports. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Preferred knowledgeskillsand abilities:
Bachelors degree in criminal justice physiology anatomy biology or related field.
3 years of death investigation experience
Experience working with a Coroner or Medical Examiner office
Medical background (such as nursingparamedic/EMT pharmaceutical medical technician hospital medical staff laboratory etc.)
Must have basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology pathophysiology pharmacology psychology medical terminology and technical report writing.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT: Must have the ability to assess complex situations and problems to determineappropriate courseof actiondemonstratingcommitment to compliance of policy procedure and all applicable laws or know when to ask a supervisor for direction.Ability to exercise mature judgment and react effectively and professionally in emergencies and stressful situations.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Understanding of policies and procedures and goals specific to the Coroners Office.Requires up to date knowledge of laws and standards of medicolegal death investigation anatomy physiology medical terminology and forensic pathology.Understanding of rules laws and goals specific to the coroners office. Working knowledgeof medical terminology physiologyanatomy and current death investigative practices.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this jobthe employeeis regularly required totalksee and hear clearly. The employeefrequentlyis required towalkreach with hands and arms climb or balance and stoop kneel crouch or crawl.The employeeis occasionally required tostand and/or sit forlong periodsof time.The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than one hundred (100) pounds. Specific vision abilities required bythis job include the abilityto adjust focus and distinguish colors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work may occur in a typical office setting morgue private residence on highways at mountain terrain or a variety of other settings. While performing the duties of this jobthe employee may work and drive invarious typesof inclement outside weather conditions and may be exposed to environmental hazardsbiohazards or bloodborne pathogens. Must be able to tolerate working with formalin fixative.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
AVAILABILITY/ACCESSIBILITY: This position requires scheduling of 40 hours per week in any configuration ensuring 24/7/365 coverage of operations. Scheduling may change in advance or last minute to accommodate open shifts light duty sickleaveor vacation time of other employees.
In the event ofan emergency/disaster in or near the County all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available toassistthe County Manager Elected/Appointed Officialsand Department Directors to ensure the continued operation ofany and allnecessary County functions. This may require being available to performadditionalduties and hours beyond what is normally.In the event thatanon-exempt employee worksmore than 40 hours a week in support of County operationstheemployee may receive overtime or otherappropriate compensationin accordance withexisting County policies or at the discretion of the County.
Additional Job Information:
A valid Colorado drivers license is required for positions that drive on County Business in either a county or personal vehicle within30-daysof hire or beginning to serve as an intern or volunteer.
Offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion ofcriminal history motor vehicle report education verification and/or referencesfor all positions.
