SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Orientation and Mobility Specialist is responsible for providing direct services and consultation to students who are visually impaired or blind.
SUPERVISED BY: Assistant Director of Special Education
POSITION PAID ON AN AS NEEDED BASIS
ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS:
- Major areas of Responsibility and Duties Specific to this Job
- Assessment: Evaluate students orientation skills mobility and visual function to develop individualized goal-oriented plans.
- Instruction: Teach techniques for safe travel including the use of white canes sensory awareness GPS devices and street crossing.
- Environmental Modification: Assess indoor and outdoor environments for safety and recommend modifications for better navigation.
- Community Integration: Teach the use of public transportation and navigation in unfamiliar public settings.
- Consultation: Collaborate with families school staff and other professionals to reinforce mobility skills and support independence.
- Reporting: Maintain detailed records of progress assessments and data-driven updates.
CONTACTS: Students parents support staff administrative staff and community members.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors Degree or higher in Orientation and Mobility
- ACVREP Certified and National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC) from the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB)
- Colorado Department of Education license endorsed in Orientation and Mobility
- Minimum of 2 years teaching Orientation and Mobility preferred.
- A history of teaching basic independent living skills (home-to-work skills) with young adults and/ or adults and seniors.
SPECIFIC SKILLS RECOMMENDED:
- Knowledge and understanding of primary eye conditions including Cortical Visual Impairment is imperative.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills flexible detail-oriented.
- Must have strong interpersonal skills emotional intelligence patience and ability to relate to a diverse population of students.
- Assess and teach to differing skill levels as well as to train on varied mobility devices and options such as: monocular tints GPS Apps and use (ie Blind Square Google Maps) Accessible Pedestrian Signals and tactile maps (public streets transit hubs and public spaces and buildings).
- Formulate individual sequential training plans.
