Role description:
Arcadis is seeking a junior-level Biologist/Ecologist/Environmental Scientist to join our Enviro Socio Permitting team in primarily serving northern California and southern Oregon. The successful candidate will conduct desktop reviews and support field data collection for wetlands delineations special-status species habitat assessments and environmental assessments. This role will primarily support Arcadis planning and permitting team working with linear infrastructure clients in California. The Projects are often fast-paced multi-faceted and geographically diverse. The position will require a candidate to work both collaboratively with a team of resource specialists and have the capacity to balance varying priorities and tasks to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines. Arcadis offers a flexible working environment and follows a hybrid work structure. A successful candidate can expect to work remotely and from the office as needed based on demands of specific tasks and teams.

Role accountabilities:
As a junior-level Biologist/Ecologist/Environmental Scientist you will apply your technical knowledge to work with client teams to provide high quality deliverables to support planning and permitting for major utility clients. You will be an important member of the west coast biological team interacting with other junior level biologists/ecologist senior technical experts and project managers as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team.
Primary functions will include:
- Conduct desktop assessments and field surveys (e.g. habitat evaluations and presence/absence surveys) to evaluate potential project impacts to sensitive habitats or special-status species.
- Prepare technical reports such as species survey reports mitigation and monitoring plans and biological assessments.
- Use your strong technical writing attention to detail time management and communications skills to draft project documents and support the development of technical analysis comprehensive reports and documents under the direction of mid and senior level team members.
- Use your knowledge of California ecology and special-status species to analyze presence or absence of resources and to determine how to avoid and minimize impacts to sensitive resources.
This role will primarily be office based however as needed you will need to conduct field assessments related to ecological projects. This will require a working knowledge of GPS systems and the ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours as well as carry supplies weighing up to 30 pounds. This role will require the ability to travel up to 25%.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelors degree in biology ecology botany or other natural resource related field
- One year of experience in the environmental field or advanced degree in environmental science or similar
- Knowledge of California ecology and habitats special-status plants and/or wildlife and/or botanical knowledge
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years of experience in the environmental consulting industry
- Experience using online agency databases and mapping tools such as Google Earth CNDDB and ORBIC or other datasets; familiarity with ArcGIS Pro and the development of figures
- Experience conducting field surveys with a focus on the species of northern California and Oregon and/or experience conducting stream and wetland delineations and strong knowledge of field safety protocols
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive reports/permit applications and working with federal land management agencies (BLM USFS NPS etc.)
- Experience with linear construction projects (e.g. utility projects pipeline projects etc.)
