Job Summary

50% - Teaching Collection Care
  • Water all plants in the teaching collection and throughout Haworth Hall.
  • Sweep and collect dead plant material from floors and benches for composting.
  • Prune and deadhead plants as instructed by supervisory staff.
  • Develop and maintain a general knowledge of plants in the collection in order to quickly identify common health or maintenance issues.
30% - Facilities Upkeep
  • Clear floor and sink drain traps of debris to maintain proper drainage.
  • Sweep and power-wash floors in all greenhouse houses.
  • Provide occasional assistance with heating and cooling system maintenance as needed.
20% - Research Greenhouse Upkeep
  • Remove compost from all greenhouse houses and transport it to designated outdoor bins.
  • Assist with occasional fertilizing trimming or repotting of experimental plants in support of research activities.

Position Overview
This student position will assist the Greenhouse Manager with daily upkeep. The role will focus mainly on tending our teaching collection (watering pruning repotting etc.) and general greenhouse upkeep (washing pots cleaning floors composting plant material etc.).

Student employees will have two or three days assigned for watering composting and daily tasks (30 min/day) in addition to special projects such as updating displays rearranging rooms helping with plant sales and other tasks as they pop up (2-5 hr/week). Student employees will interact with greenhouse visitors including other students faculty staff and outside groups to assist with navigation and any questions visitors may have.

  1. This position requires frequent standing bending reaching and crouching into cramped areas. The environment is often very hot (100 F in the summer) with high humidity.
  2. Student employees may need to lift pots and soil bags that can weigh up to 50 lbs. This position will also require weekend and holiday work (shared between other student employees).
  3. During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).


Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
