Tenure-Track Faculty Position in History (South Asian History)

Job Summary
The History Department at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in South Asian History to begin in August 2026. We seek Jesuits with a Ph.D. in History whose areas of research and teaching particularly focus on Anglo-Indian communities missionary encounters and the intersection of religion and social hierarchy in South Asia. We are especially looking for a historian whose research centers on the religious dimensions of social and cultural life in the region and who will strengthen our existing coverage of South Asia. Demonstrated proficiency in relevant South Asian languages is essential.
Preference will be given to candidates who complement the History Departments established expertise in South Asia by developing and expanding course offerings on religion imperialism and the dynamics of inter-religious relations. Prospective candidates should also be prepared to offer courses regularly on Global Catholicism and Christianity History of Jesuits including comparative classes examining Christian missionaries and their entanglements with the politics of empire. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Historians Craft and to develop courses that contribute to our curriculums Global Themes as well as to take full part in our departmental service obligations.
This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a research leave prior to tenure review of either a full year at 80% salary or a semester at full salary and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. To enable a smooth transition to Holy Cross new full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e. 2-2). This position offers full benefits and a starting salary of $101850. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and undergraduate teaching as well as a commitment to inclusive pedagogies. Ph.D. required by the beginning of the appointment.
