This full-time high school teaching position at Briar Woods High School and Tuscarora High School is part of the Health and Medical Sciences (HAMSci) Academy a Special Program designed to prepare students for postsecondary study and careers in health and medical fields.
The HAMSci Academy Teacher plans designs implements and assesses an instructional program that guides and encourages a diverse group of students in grades 912 to develop and fulfill their academic and career potential. The teacher creates authentic engaging rigorous and relevant learning experiences aligned to LCPS curriculum and state standards monitors and communicates student progress and collaborates with colleagues and community partners to expand learning beyond the classroom.
High school students are transitioning from adolescence to young adulthood and preparing for life after high school. Teachers are expected to promote a learning environment that is challenging equitable empowering and developmentally responsive while supporting students as they explore health and medical science pathways.
Roles and Responsibilities

Teaches Introduction to Health and Medical Sciences and Medical Terminology courses within the HAMSci Academy.
Designs and implements authentic and engaging learning experiences using LCPS curriculum Virginia standards and effective instructional strategies to maximize student achievement.
Creates learning experiences that promote critical thinking collaboration problem solving and real-world application in health and medical contexts.
Establishes a safe supportive and inclusive classroom environment that enables student agency ownership and reflection.
Personalizes instruction based on student needs and manages instructional time to maximize learning opportunities.
Develops and administers assessments; analyzes student performance data to refine instruction and support student growth.
Adheres to LCPS assessment grading and instructional guidelines.
Maintains accurate records of student progress and communicates regularly with students and parents/guardians regarding academic performance and expectations.
Collaborates with HAMSci Academy Coordinator to plan enrichment activities guest speakers field experiences and other experiential learning opportunities.
Plans instructional activities with school-based and non-school-based professionals to enhance student learning.
Participates actively in the schools professional learning community to deepen understanding of curriculum content and instructional practices.
Participates in school-level duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal.
Supports colleagues students parents and community stakeholders to promote student learning and mastery of content and competencies.
Pursues ongoing professional development related to health and medical sciences education and instructional best practices.

Option A: A Virginia Teaching license with a Health and Medical Science Endorsement
Requirements for a Health and Medical Sciences endorsement:
Earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and graduated from an approved program of study in a health care field; or
Earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and hold a current license or certification as a professional practitioner in a health care field and completed two years of successful full-time or the equivalent of occupational experience within the past five years in an area related to the teaching specialty sought.
Option B: Technical Professional License in Health and Medical Science
Requirements for a Technical Professional License:
A license or certification as a professional practitioner in one of the following areas (Practical Nursing Nurse Aide Allied Health);
Completed two years of full-time or the equivalent of occupational experience within the past five years in the teaching specialty sought;
Completed a health occupations certificate or associate degree program from a regionally accredited institution in the teaching specialty area sought
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of health and medical sciences content curriculum instructional methods materials and equipment.
Knowledge of adolescent growth and development.
Ability to apply current research and instructional theory to classroom practice.
Skill in the use of instructional technology and multimedia tools to enhance learning.
Ability to plan and implement lessons aligned with division and school objectives and student needs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students colleagues administrators parents and community partners.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
