Social Work Services at the Mount Sinai Hospital


The Mount Sinai Hospital is a 1134-bed facility with an extensive outpatient and specialty care network and is the largest hospital in the Mount Sinai Health Care System. It offers comprehensive social work services and programming to meet the myriad needs of the diverse populations we serve. We believe that total patient care must emphasize the physical emotional and social needs of each patient and their care partners. Social Workers collaborate within interprofessional teams to serve patients and the larger community from both a micro and macro level including both direct care and prevention. Founded in 1907 the Department of Social Work Services at the Mount Sinai Hospital is one of the oldest hospital social work departments in the nation with over 450 licensed social workers employed across more than 65 different program/service areas. Employment in our department provides a pathway to LCSW licensure as well as access to a broad range of continuing education professional development and extra-curricular opportunities.

The social worker in this position will be primarily based in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with additional inpatient coverage of the Medicine patients admitted to the Oncology units. A demonstrated history of successful interprofessional collaboration and agility will be necessary for the person in this role.



Responsibilities

PACU Responsibilities:

The PACU social worker will provide psychosocial services to PACU patients admitted for all service areas(e.g. urology endocrinology vascular gastroenterology colon/rectal surgery). The social worker will be responsible for conducting assessments and addressing social determinants of health (SDH) identifying post-surgical psychosocial needs and ensuring continuity of position will address throughput/discharge issues of PACU patients directly impacting Operating Room availability and patient satisfaction.

Inpatient Responsibilities:

The inpatient units of 10C 11C and 11E are primarily Oncology units and followed by the Medical Oncology social worker. The Medical Oncology social worker is responsible for following patients on these units who have an active cancer diagnosis. These units also carry a small cohort of Medicine patients typically averaging 5 8 patients across all floors. The social worker in this role will provide psychosocial services to these patients with an emphasis on helping patients and families dealing with the impact of acute and chronic illness. There is a strong emphasis on complex discharge planning.



Qualifications
  • NYS LMSW or LCSW.
  • Excellent clinical collaborative and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention family systems and an ability to work with various hospital and community systems.
  • Ability to be extremely flexible and work effectively on multiple units with diverse staff often on short notice.
  • Strong interest in working with chronically and critically ill patients with complex psychosocial needs.
  • Inpatient hospital experience preferred.
  • Minimum year in current position unless currently in Float in Medicine.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $88691.20 - $101670.78 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors including experience education and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
