General Summary:

Provides respiratory care to patients as assigned and given on a physicians order for both in-house and out-patient care.

Education Licensure Registration and Experience:

Graduate of or currently enrolled student of an approved school of Respiratory Care.

Must possess current Limited Permit License in the State of Ohio

CPR certification required. BLS is expected at renewal.

ACLS NRP within 6 months of hire

Essential Functions:

Responsible for the safe and effective administration of prescribed medications knowing their indications and contraindications.

Knows and follows the indications and contraindications the policy and procedures in administering therapeutic modalities to include: IPPB IS HHN MDI DPI ETC.

Sets up and monitors oxygen administration.

Sets up oxygen cylinders and assures proper usage and safety measures are in place.

Performs arterial punctures using radial brachial and femoral sites independently. Draws off arterial lines to obtain sample for blood gas analysis.

Be a member of the Code Blue and Rapid Response Team responding to arrest situations. As part of the team may be expected to perform CPR (compression). Must be certified in CPR procedures and manual ventilation.

Perform patient assessment develops care plan for implementation and for Registered Therapist approval.

Performs all aspects of artificial airway care. Able to perform deep blind tracheal suctioning on patients.

Daily/weekly preventative maintenance and calibration quality assurance of ABG analyzers.

Familiar with measuring devices to include but not limited to pulse oximeter Wrights respirometer oxygen blenders oxygen analyzers peak flow meter.

Responsible for the set up safety check monitoring and troubleshooting of mechanical ventilators.

Familiar with CPAP/BIPAP set up and administration of CPAP/BIPAP

Maintains accurate and legible records documenting clinical notes in patients charts.

Participation in reporting patient progress and prioritizing patient condition to the next shift.

Proper documentation in department records. Participates in staff meetings attends lectures. conferences and seminars.

Attends all required safety training programs and can describe their responsibilities related to general safety department/service safety infection control and specific job related hazards.

Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients families visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional responsible and courteous environment.

Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the departments/units ability to meet its goals and objectives.

Communicates changes in the patients condition or treatment to patients physicians family staff and other departments with special emphasis placed on a concise factual organized verbal report of all patients treated during the shift.

Makes clinical rounds with Medical Director anesthesia ordering physicians and department managers as required.

When requested provides guidance to any other personnel. May perform other related duties as directed.

Attends monthly staff meetings and participates in monthly rounding process with manager to assure effective and timely two-way communications.

Participates in and completes required department specific education and training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job-related hazards.

Follows safety and security policies including exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
