Job Summary

The School of Ocean Futures (SOF) in the Rob Walton College of Global Futures (CGF) at Arizona State University invites applications for one full-time benefit-eligible academic year (9-month) Teaching Professor position in Ocean Futures with an anticipated start in Fall 2026.

This appointment is non-tenure track and will be made at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor commensurate with the candidates experience and accomplishments. This appointment is for one academic year and subsequent academic year renewals are contingentcontingent upon satisfactory performance availability of resources and the needs of the school.

The successful candidate will teach eight courses per academic year typically four courses per semester with most of this teaching occurring at the undergraduate level. The courses will be taught on the Tempe campus as well as in online addition to teaching service on school or university committees is expected.

Applicants should have experience in college- or university-level teaching and student mentoring and be able to teach introductory-level Ocean Futures marine biology and ocean conservation courses to Ocean Futures majors as well as to non-major students taking these classes to meet ASUs General Education Sustainability Requirement.

Ideally applicants will also have some research and/or professional experience in the field of Ocean Futures for example oceanography coastal planning marine education etc. as they will also be expected to co-teach the Ocean Futures Capstone course in which undergraduate majors and masters students work in teams on real problems with real partners.

Areas of interest or expertise within Ocean Futures are open including (but not limited to) marine environmental science or marine ecology marine environmental policy marine energy systems or other infrastructure fishing or marine food systems coastal urbanism/planning and blue economies.

Successful candidates will contribute heavily to the pedagogical mission of the SOF including teaching general studies sustainability courses to students with a wide array of interests and majors. Therefore candidates with a passion for clearly communicating ocean science to the general public and a capacity for dynamic and compelling pedagogy are highly encouraged to apply.

  • Deliver instruction in both immersion (in-person) and digital immersion (online) formats for undergraduate and masters classes
  • Contribute to curriculum updating and integration of effective teaching pedagogies
  • Supervise and mentor teaching assistants
  • Serve on internal and external committees


Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree required in oceanography marine biology marine conservation or another appropriate field by the time of appointment
  • Evidence of at least one year of college- or university-level teaching experience in oceanography marine biology marine conservation or a closely related field

Teaching Associate Professor

In addition to the required qualifications for appointment at the Teaching Assistant Professor stated above the successful candidate in this rank should provide:

  • Evidence of at least five (5) years of college- or university-level teaching
  • Demonstrated record of teaching competence as evidenced by teaching evaluations course development and innovative teaching practices
  • Evidence of successful mentoring both in formal (e.g. committees) and informal settings
  • Evidence of contributions in curriculum development programmatic responsibilities and departmental service responsibilities such as faculty committees

Desired Qualifications (All Ranks)

  • Ph.D. in oceanography or an appropriate field
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering teaching in immersion (in-person) and online formats using learning management systems and instructional technologies
  • Evidence of strong commitment to teaching excellence and student success including asynchronous online teaching lectures effective assessments and other classroom activities
  • Potential for the candidates teaching and mentoring activities to foster the values of ASU as reflected in the ASU Charter
  • Experience supervising students and teaching assistants
  • Scholarship or professional experience in the field of ocean science
