Controller

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and hands-on Controller to lead the financial operations of a growing mechanical contracting company. This role is critical in driving financial accuracy job cost visibility and strategic decision-making across the organization. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in construction or mechanical contracting with a strong understanding of job costing WIP reporting and project-based accounting.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Reporting

• Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger AP/AR payroll and financial reporting
• Prepare and deliver accurate monthly quarterly and annual financial statements
• Lead the month-end and year-end close processes
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and company financial policies

Job Costing & Project Accounting

• Manage and maintain accurate job costing systems across all projects
• Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting including revenue recognition and cost tracking
• Partner with project managers to review project financial performance budgets and forecasts
• Analyze job profitability and provide actionable insights to leadership

Budgeting Forecasting & Strategy

• Develop annual budgets and rolling forecasts aligned with company goals
• Provide financial analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making
• Monitor cash flow working capital and financial health of the business
• Identify risks and opportunities within project pipelines and overall operations

Team Leadership & Process Improvement

• Lead mentor and develop the accounting team
• Implement and improve accounting systems controls and workflows
• Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency and reporting accuracy
• Collaborate cross-functionally with operations estimating and executive leadership

Compliance & Controls

• Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with all financial regulations
• Coordinate audits tax filings and external reporting requirements
• Manage relationships with external auditors banks and financial partners

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field (CPA preferred)
• 715 years of progressive accounting experience with significant experience in construction or mechanical contracting
• Strong expertise in job costing WIP reporting percentage-of-completion accounting and project-based financials
• Experience managing accounting teams in a fast-paced project-driven environment
• Proficiency with accounting/ERP systems (e.g. Sage 300 Viewpoint Foundation or similar)
• Advanced Excel skills and strong financial analysis capabilities
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner with both finance and operations teams

Preferred Experience

• Background in HVAC plumbing or industrial mechanical contracting
• Experience with multi-project high-revenue construction environments
• CPA or CMA certification
