Position Purpose
The welder position maintains equipment assigned to the Equipment Department. Individuals in this position make repairs through expert use of welding cutting and heating technology. The position repairs parts and other assemblies by heating cutting fitting and welding. This position will fabricate assemblies by cutting layout fitting and welding. This position will be called upon to assist others in cases of emergency and assigned other tasks requiring equal or less skill.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform structural and repair welding on: Truck frames bolsters and undercarriage components.
- Railcar bodies shells and structural members.
- Brackets supports and auxiliary equipment.
- Execute welding processes including SMAW GMAW GTAW FCAW and other approved methods.
- Interpret blueprints welding symbols (AWS A2.4) and repair procedures.
- Follow approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and ensure compliance with qualified procedures.
- Conduct cutting gouging fitting and fabrication as required.
- Inspect welds visually and assist with nondestructive testing (NDT) when required.
- Maintain tools welding equipment and work areas in safe operating condition.
- Complete documentation related to work performed inspections and repairs.
- Adhere to all safety environmental and transit authority regulations. May be assigned other tasks requiring equal or less skill.
- The individual for this position assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity and using all required personal protective equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to all provisions of the DRPA/PATCOS Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy including random drug testing and periodic physical testing requirements.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Proficiency in multiple welding processes (SMAW GMAWGTAW FCAW).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and WPS documents.
- Knowledge of weld defects inspection methods and repair techniques.
- Understanding of heat distortion metallurgy and structural integrity.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and varying shop/field environments.
- Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
- Perform job duties independently and take responsibility for correct and timely completion of assigned work.
- Derive proper techniques configurations and adjustment from experience and the use of shop maintenance and rebuild manuals.
- The individual must communicate effectively with internal and external customers.

Education and/or Experience
Required:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Four (4) years experience as a maintenance welder or industrial welder.
- AWS Welder GTAW Certification in horizontal vertical and overhead positions.
- Qualification under AWS D15.1 or equivalent rail welding code.
- Demonstrated ability to pass Welder Qualification Tests (WQT/WQTR).
- Individual must be able to pass a written test and hands-on demonstration of skills.
Preferred:
- SMAW GMAWGTAW FCAW certification in horizontal vertical and overhead positions.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to sit (20%). The employee is required to stand and walk (40%) and lift climb and bend (40%). Walk stoop crawl climb stairs steps and ladders etc. while carrying weighted objects. The employee must occasionally hold and position objects up to 140 pounds. The individual must have normal day and nighttime vision corrected or uncorrected lack of color blindness and have normal hearing corrected or uncorrected
Climb up and down ladders and Transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet and lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same. Have the ability to wear a negative pressure respirator. Must be able to perform all position functions. Must be able to physically operate all job-related equipment to position functions.

This position requires the incumbent to work both indoors and outdoors in all types of lighting and weather conditions including but not limited to heat sun rain electrical storms snow ice fire smoke and other unspecified hazards.
- Work is performed inside in general lighting heating and ventilation.
- Cleaning work is performed outside in prevailing climate conditions.
- Work must be performed in rail storage yards along active railroads right of way on bridges and in subways.
- Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) operates electrically propelled rail cars.
- Must be constantly aware of the hazards that cause electric shock and electrical flash burns.
- Protective clothing eye protection hearing protection dust masks and respirators are provided to protect against chemical splashing airborne debris toxic fumes and sustained loud or high pitch noises that are encountered in maintenance shops.
