Position Summary:
The Family Engagement Coordinator for Multilingual Learners (MLL) is responsible for welcoming new MLL families coordinating and facilitating Parent-Teacher Conferences assisting families with integration into school activities and ensuring the smooth administration of the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screen (OELPS) and other assessments. This role requires strong communication and organizational skills to support the academic social and emotional development of MLL students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Family Engagement and Support:
- Welcome and orient new MLL families to the school community.
- Provide basic translations for non-English speaking parents regarding grade-level updates field trips needed school materials and other school-related information.
- Assist families and students in joining sports teams music groups and extracurricular activities.
- Share strategies with parents to support MLL students in developing proficiency in two or more languages.
- Ensure inclusion of MLL families in school activities and events.
- Act as a liaison between parents and teachers facilitating communication and understanding.
Coordination and Facilitation of Assessments:- Identify new MLL students using the Language Usage Form.
- Schedule and proctor the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screen (OELPS) across the district.
- Coordinate the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) and other relevant testing (MAP and OST) for MLL students.
- Proctor and assess current MLL students sharing results with families.
- Coordinate testing schedules in all buildings for MLL students.
Communication and Liaison:- Facilitate Parent-Teacher Conferences and grade-level meetings ensuring effective communication between families and school staff.
- Coordinate interpreters for parent conferences and other school events as needed.
- Prepare and distribute parent letters to newly identified and continuing MLL students.
Direct MLL Instruction and Student Support:- Provide direct instruction in academic English conventions reading comprehension Tier 1 and Tier 2 vocabulary and course-specific vocabulary.
- Consult with classroom teachers on MLL student progress academic progress study skills student self-advocacy social/emotional development and grade-level events and expectations.
- Advocate for the identification of MLL students for Gifted programs IEP/504 plans and other special needs.
Cultural Integration and Advocacy:- Provide explicit instruction on school culture as well as American/Midwest culture holidays and other relevant cultural topics for newcomer students.
- Facilitate family-teacher conversations about cultural codes and cultural misunderstandings to promote better understanding and integration.
- Support the cultural integration of MLL students and their families into the school community.
Administrative Duties:- Manage EMIS codes for newly identified MLL students and service codes.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of MLL students and their progress.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Education TESOL or a related field.
- Experience working with multilingual learners and their families.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency in a second language preferred.
- Knowledge of Ohios educational policies and assessments for MLL students.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers administrators parents and students.
