We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Teacher Assistant (TA) to join our educational team located within a youth correctional facility. As a TA you will play an essential role in assisting teachers with daily tasks general classroom supervision day-to-day class functionality and classroom addition to helping your primary responsibility will be to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students at all times.
Duties and Responsibilities
The teacher assistant reports directly to the Principal and works under the guidance and supervision of the principal or her designee. TAs perform many organizational and classroom management tasks to support both teachers and students.
Helping teachers with lesson preparation
Distributing and collecting learning materials
Working with students on a one-on-one basis or in small groups
Ensuring the wellbeing and safety of students at all times
Assisting students who need special accommodations
Assisting students with assignments or difficult concepts
Assisting students with special learning requirements including disabilities or English Language Learner students
Collaborating with the teacher to identify students concerns and recommend solutions
Attending staff meetings
Observing state school and class rules and regulations
Skills and Qualifications
An effective teacher assistant possesses general knowledge in core content areas and uses a variety of soft skills to promote a safe engaging and educational experience in the classroom.
High school diploma or GED
Teacher Assistant Training Program Certificate or 6 months of related experience
Training in classroom activities and teaching practices preferred
Experience working with special needs students preferred
Must pass a BCI
Excellent communication skills including writing interpersonal communication and active listening
Great organization and planning skills
Collaboration and teamwork abilities
Flexible and able to adapt in a rapidly changing environment
In-depth knowledge of subjects or discipline they are assisting with
Understanding of pedagogical best practices
Ability to engage students grades 6-12
Ability to work well with students with various learning needs
Patience and empathy
Compassionate positive and encouraging attitude
