This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Rutherford County. This position will report to the Rutherford County Maintenance Office. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones installing traffic control devices repairing asphalt pavements clearing right of way of debris and hazards assisting with pipe installation and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer asphalt patch truck tandem dump truck crack sealing machine rollers sweepers skid steer and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal downed trees and traffic control cleanup etc. during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 $33902.00- $59327.00
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace Safety policies.
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
- Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor asphalt mixer asphalt patcher crack sealing machine ditching machine force feed loader lube truck asphalt maintainer post driver skid steer street sweeper tandem dump truck tractor A boom mower truck w/aerial device).
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation installation of erosion control devices snow and ice removal ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Education Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements: Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
