Job Summary
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Dental Hygienist plays a key role in delivering high-quality preventive and periodontal care to dental patients across the lifespan. This position supports the clinical operations of the dental team by performing routine oral hygiene procedures providing patient education and assisting with clinical workflows that promote patient safety efficiency and satisfaction. The Dental Hygienist works collaboratively with the Dentist and clinical staff to ensure continuity of care in a fast-paced FQHC environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine dental prophylaxis scaling root planning and periodontal maintenance.
- Conduct comprehensive oral health assessments and charting.
- Take and interpret dental radiographs.
- Prepare and maintain exam rooms instruments and equipment in compliance with infection control protocols.
- Provide individualized oral health education counseling and preventive care strategies tailored to patient needs.
- Support the dentist in developing and implementing patient treatment plans.
- Document patient encounters in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) accurately and in a timely manner.
- Identify and report medical or dental conditions requiring referral or further evaluation.
- Monitor and maintain supplies inventory and equipment.
- Adhere to all federal state and organizational policies and procedures including HIPAA OSHA and infection prevention standards.
- Participate in quality improvement risk management and compliance initiatives.
- Support clinical workflow scheduling and patient flow optimization.
- Contribute to a team-based culture of respect accountability and patient-centered care.
OTHER DUTIES:
Must be able to perform opening and closing responsibilities as assigned.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Strong clinical and patient assessment skills
- Knowledge of dental procedures infection control and radiology safety
- Experience with electronic health records (EPIC preferred)
- Strong communication and patient education skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team-based environment
- Commitment to serving underserved populations
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates or Bachelors degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program
- Minimum of 12 years of clinical experience preferred preferably in a community health or FQHC setting
- Current New Jersey Dental Hygienist license
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- Local anesthesia certification (if applicable per NJ regulations)
