About SAfG
By joining the SAfG Board youll be standing behind one of the only non-profits in the Bay Area dedicated exclusively to dismantling these barriers through afterschool STEM programming for girls at Title I schools. Your support will help us reach even more young girls with programming designed to spark lasting STEM confidence and belonging and to build the life skills theyll carry with them always: critical thinking curiosity collaboration problem solving perseverance and determination.
Youll be joining a warm committed community of people who believe that changing the face of STEM starts early and who share a vision of a more gender-equitable world A STEM workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities it serves where women particularly women of color hold equal voice influence and economic power in the fields that shape our world.
The Opportunity
SAfG is looking for mission-driven professionals to join its Board of Directors. Board members play a vital governance role providing strategic oversight financial stewardship and community advocacy to help SAfG grow and thrive for the long term. This is a volunteer position.
Were currently welcoming applications for three board seats and one community advisor:
- Member 1 Finance: CFO Director of Finance or equivalent with expertise in financial management investments and accounting best practices
- Member 2 People & Legal: CPO Director of HR/Talent Management labor attorney or equivalent with expertise in human resources or employment law
- Member 3 Open Expertise: A professional background not yet represented on the board (e.g. marketing nonprofit management technology or policy)
- Community Advisor: A parent caregiver or community member with lived experience connected to the girls and families SAfG serves
Must-Have Qualifications
Were looking for people who bring:
- A deep commitment to SAfGs mission values and the communities we serve particularly girls and under-resourced youth
- Genuine enthusiasm for active participation in board meetings committees and events
- The ability to offer strategic guidance and contribute to long-term organizational planning
- A sound understanding of financial stewardship and fiduciary responsibility including reviewing budgets and financial statements
- Ethical leadership and integrity with consistent adherence to conflict-of-interest policies
- A collaborative spirit and the ability to work constructively with diverse stakeholders
- A willingness to serve as an organizational ambassador including attending at least one networking event per fiscal year
- The ability to support fundraising through leveraging networks donor cultivation or personal financial contribution
- Sufficient availability to prepare for and meaningfully contribute to governance responsibilities
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Its a bonus if you:
- Are based in the Bay Area
- Have prior nonprofit board experience
- Bring lived experience or a background that reflects the communities SAfG serves geographically demographically or socioeconomically
Time Commitment
We want to be upfront about what board membership looks like so you can make an informed and enthusiastic yes:
- Board meetings: Bi-monthly beginning in October 1.5 hours per session (6 meetings/year); members are expected to attend at least 5 of 6
- Committee work: Monthly or bi-monthly participation on at least one board committee (e.g. Finance/Operations Development/Events/Marketing Programming/Curriculum Executive/Governance)
- Events: Attendance at a minimum of one SAfG event or fundraiser per year
- Fundraising: Each board member helps raise or contribute a minimum of $5000 per year through donor outreach event support or other means
- Term: Minimum of one two-year term
