Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 12-month / Salaried exempt
Salary Schedule: This is a non-negotiated position. Compensation and benefits will be administered consistent with District policy. Salary schedule 92C Specialist 3
Position Purpose: The School Safety Specialist will work with Staff District and school leaders students and families to identify safety concerns and align resources and supports to address these concerns. This includes working with schools students and families on developing implementing and monitoring school safety plans developing transition plans recommending changes to policies and procedures and working with the team to resolve safety issues. A key role will be the planning and facilitating of safety-related professional development. Assistance to school staff with district procedures and protocols for Threat Assessment. Having the knowledge of district procedures regarding OPS Security Officers as well as assisting the school administration with the needs of OPS Security Officers. This individual serves as a member of the District and the TAC Safety team as well as guiding school safety teams with best practices throughout the school year.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
- Provides assistance and guidance to building administration in establishing and maintaining a safe orderly school climate.
- Assists with developing ongoing training and implementation of district and school emergency operation plans.
- Audit school and district safety plans as assigned.
- Coordinate response efforts to tips that are received from Nebraska Safe2Help by collaborating with school administration counseling social workers health services security officers and school resource officers to provide support and resources to students families and schools.
- Serves as a liaison between law enforcement the fire department community organizations the school and families to facilitate communication between involved participants.
- Managing resources for incidents that result in law enforcement involvement to assist in engagement needs.
- Provides support to school administration students and families in response to district K-2s and/or crisis situations.
- Assist in coordinating response efforts in any crisis. This includes being a first responder at the site and coordination of efforts between Omaha Public Schools and other agencies to support the needs of building administration and families.
- Will be a member of the Teacher Administrative Center Safety Team.
- Maintain data and records of school safety topics and information relating to law enforcement.
- Will assist with role in job duties interviews job performance and other School Security Officer business.
- Assist as the point of contact for assistance to the School Security Officer position.
- Will assist with the role of developing district practices planning and facilitating district professional development for Threat Assessment.
- May provide onboarding for new OPS Security Officers.
- Assists with new security officer hires including setting up scheduled times to check in and work with building administrators to determine areas of growth to address with the new hires.
- Create reports and presentations as assigned
- Lead special projects as assigned.
Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Equipment: This position may require the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers copiers and scanners. Must always comply with Omaha Public Schools guidelines for equipment use.
Travel: Travel between schools community locations and central offices will be required. Occasional travel outside of the Omaha area may be required.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance
- In order for schools to operate effectively employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday unless the employee has received approved leave.
- Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employees supervisor or building administrator.
- All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.
- Regular attendance is important.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- A bachelors Degree in administration criminal justice political science social science or other related safety and/or security experience is preferred
- Capacity to lead a large group of staff members.
- Ability to work outside of normal business hours on weekends or overtime on short notice may be required.
- Excellent skills in organization time management communication and interpersonal skills.
- High-level skills in verbal and written communication.
- Ability to effectively and appropriately assess and address the needs characteristics and interactions of students families and the community.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to problem-solve and multitask.
- Knowledge of outside agencies that offer services for students and families.
- Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality.

- Knowledge of OPSs mission purpose goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them.
- This individual will exhibit skills pertinent to foster positive human relationships and the ability to work effectively with staff students parents and the community.
Terms of Employment
This position is treated as a full-time exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment or teaching in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies as those laws and policies may change from time to time and the Teacher Contract. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.
