The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an entry-level Lawyer to join the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) within Monash University supporting the Data Privacy and Protection Office (DPPO) function. This is an ideal role for a recently admitted or early-career legal professional seeking to build a meaningful career in a dynamic complex and fast paced University environment.

In this role you will support the delivery of legal services across a broad range of matters with a particular focus on privacy law health law data protection and intellectual property including exposure to obligations arising under the Australian Privacy Act the Victorian Privacy and Data Protection Act and the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Working under the guidance of senior lawyers you will assist with drafting and reviewing agreements related to data sharing data protection information technology and licencing and protecting intellectual property. You will advise on statutory and regulatory requirements prepare advice manage document execution processes responding to information requests help prepare privacy impact assessments and assist with the Universitys move towards artificial intelligence and other modern technologies

You will gain hands-on experience across diverse areas of legal practice while developing a strong understanding of the regulatory landscape applicable to international higher education institutions and the research sector. The role also offers the opportunity to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and to support the development of policies and processes relating to the safety of personal information health information and data handling.

Your ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders will be central to your success enabling you to provide practical support and contribute to efficient high-quality legal outcomes across the organisation.

About You

  • A degree in law and eligibility for (or current holder of) an Australian Practising Certificate with up to two years experience or equivalent relevant experience in a related area
  • A genuine interest in privacy law health law and data protection including familiarity with or willingness to develop expertise in the GDPR Australian privacy legislation and other jurisdictions as required
  • Strong interest in balancing technical legal work with stakeholder engagement
  • A confident problem-solver who can navigate complex issues and deliver practical solutions
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage competing priorities and coordinate workflows effectively
  • An excellent communicator capable of translating complex legal information into clear actionable advice
  • Proactive and collaborative with a focus on building strong relationships and improving processes
  • Motivated to contribute to a supportive team environment and make a meaningful organisational impact
  • Have experience in web-based collaboration technologies artificial intelligence tools legal matter management systems and exposure to legal operations (desirable)
