This position is in our specialized portfolio enterprise where we serve diverse businesses who support unique customers or markets including animal nutrition and health bioindustrial road safety salt and Cargill joint ventures.

Job Purpose and Impact

The Research Scientist will join a global R&D team with a commitment to driving new product chemistry and process development capabilities across all businesses within Cargill Bioindustrial.

In this role you will be laboratory-based and work under the guidance of senior research scientists to deliver industrial chemical process development product improvements and piloting efforts. You will collaborate with research teams manufacturing sites commercial teams and supporting functions (product safety quality regulatory IP supply chain etc.) to execute business defined research projects in a timely manner.

Location: United Kingdom York (YO41 1LZ)

You will be based in York but expected to work at the Hull location (HU6 7PH) for up to 50% of the time based on project needs. Therefore the ability to commute to both locations is required.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct synthesis experiments for target specialty molecules (typically using esterification amidation and hydrogenation) and develop scalable safe and cost-effective chemical processes for manufacturing.
  • Assist in the research of new process technologies to update manufacturing capabilities and improve process efficiency.
  • Perform chemical analytical testing and characterisation. Analyse and interpret data to draw conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Write comprehensive scientific technical reports and deliver oral technical presentations to audiences of varying levels and disciplines.
  • Understand chemical health and safety and participate in laboratory COSHH and risk assessments. Support and comply with corporate and local safety policies and procedures.
  • Manage and plan workflows for multiple projects prioritise and execute according to planned timeframes.
  • Apply scientific rigour and meticulous attention to detail to solving technical problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry
  • Strong knowledge of organic chemistry and experience in laboratory synthesis skills
  • Active driving license (cat.B).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience of wet chemistry methods and analytical instrumentation principles.
  • Work experience in an industrial chemistry laboratory environment.
  • Understanding and knowledge of oleochemicals
