Position Summary

Working supervisor who is responsible for planning and assignment of work for assigned custodial staff and full range of custodial duties related to the cleaning and maintenance of building and facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Plan review assign and monitor the work of assigned custodial staff.

  • Train new staff members in the appropriate methods of cleaning duties appropriate use and application of chemicals and cleaning solvent equipment and established departmental policies and procedures.

  • Supervise and/or setup and arrange furniture and equipment for classes and scheduled events.

  • Maintain custodial materials and supplies; receive and distribute materials and supplies as needed.

  • Maintain and account for custodial equipment and materials.

  • Inspect building and facilities to assure appropriate maintenance safety and cleanliness standards are maintained. Report safety hazards and identify and report maintenance needs in assigned building and facilities.

  • Maintain records and prepare reports when directed.

  • Perform general cleaning of classrooms offices conference rooms laboratories dining rooms gymnasium auditorium locker rooms libraries dorms apartments and all related areas.

  • Clean restroom facilities and related fixtures and restock supplies.

  • Perform general cleaning of windows walls doors stairs desks chairs tables blackboards and related furniture and fixtures.

  • Clean sweep vacuum extract mop strip wax polish buff and maintain floors steps entrances and halls.

  • Dispose of trash biohazards and recyclables properly.

  • Sweep and clean entranceways and steps.

  • Replace light bulbs as needed.

  • Place approved traps for general pest control. Monitor and service as required.

  • Work safely with vehicles equipment cleaning fluids chemicals and other cleaning agents.

  • Assist in snow removal from building entrances and adjacent walkways.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • The ability to organize lead and review the work of the custodial staff required.

  • The ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbal and written instructions required.

  • The ability to prepare and maintain records and reports required.

  • Ability to maintain confidential information obtained during course of work required.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

Experience in industrial or commercial cleaning preferred.

Two years experience in industrial or commercial cleaning preferred.

Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Functional Requirements

  • Ongoing physical access to departments and facilities throughout the University for extended periods. Continuous independent physical access to departments and facilities within assigned areas approximately 30000 square feet.

  • Frequent independent physical manipulation of loads of up to 20 pounds for extended periods. Occasional independent physical manipulation of loads of up to 50 pounds. Occasional physical manipulation of loads up to 100 pounds with the assistance of a co-worker.

  • Frequent bending stooping twisting reaching crouching climbing or otherwise positioning oneself to access examine and clean objects and areas in various configurations and at various heights ranging from ground level to eight feet high. Intermittent use of a ladder to reach heights up to ten feet.

  • Ongoing independent physical manipulation of cleaning equipment and machineryincluding broom and floor care machines such as vacuum buffer scrubber extractor and special purpose machineswhen maintaining floors steps entrances and halls.

  • Ongoing manipulation of small objects and hand tools for extended periods to perform cleaning tasks.

  • Frequent use of computer systems to receive and respond to emails.

  • Continuous independent assessment of assigned area to evaluate for cleanness and necessary action.

  • Continuous independent assessment of cleaning equipment performance to identify defects.

  • Ongoing receipt and accurate understanding of instructions and other communications provided by supervisors.

  • Ongoing presentation of a positive demeanor while interacting and cooperating with University employees students and visitors.

  • Consistently professional demeanor appropriate to supervisory role at all times even in difficult negative or frustrating situations such as when handling customer complaints or staff issues.

  • Ongoing selective attention to assigned tasks for prolonged periods.

Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

Standard hours include first second and third shifts.

Overtime may be required.

Travel within University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.
