At Central Special Developmental Center this role will serve as the Aquatics Physical Education Teacher working with students in the pool (lifeguard certification and pool operations license will be required) (2 days a week).
Position Details:This will be split locations shared with Central Special Developmental Center. 3 days a week the teacher will serve in an itinerant role with a case load of students and will travel between schools working with students who have APE on their IEPs. 2 days a week they will serve as the Aquatics Physical Education Teacher at Central Special Developmental Center working with students in the pool (lifeguard certification and pool operations license will be required).
JOB SUMMARY
Provides direct and indirect adapted physical education (APE) instruction to students with disabilities by developing selecting and modifying instructional plans and materials and presenting them using instructional techniques which meet the needs of all students. Consults with other school personnel in the planning delivery and evaluation of special education services provided in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual physical social and emotional development of students. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings and activities. Virtual experience may be required based on assignment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops lesson plans/instructional materials aligned to the Maryland Physical Education Framework and School Improvement Plan and provides individualized and group instruction in order to meet the needs of each student as stated on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
- Assists in organizing and implementing a continuum of appropriate APE service delivery options for students with disabilities. Plans collaboratively and provides consultation and support to general education teachers regarding implementation of IEPs reasonable modification etc.
- Assesses the progress of students on a regular basis utilizing tests curriculum measurements and observation skills and/or modified assessment devices. Provides progress reports as required.
- Serves as a member of the school IEP Team assists in the planning and development of student IEP and works collaboratively in the development and implementation of IEPs and access to the general education curriculum with general education colleagues.
- Consults and confers regularly with colleagues regarding the educational social physical or emotional goals and objectives of students. Provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals objectives and methods of instruction for students with disabilities. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional assistants teacher assistants and volunteers as appropriate.
- Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment textbooks materials and facilities. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law Board Policy and Administrative Regulation.
- Facilitates the implementation of APE programs in the LRE. Conducts educational assessments and consults regarding materials of instruction (MOI) equipment and instructional strategies appropriate for students with disabilities and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students and materials of instruction.
- Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings and system staff development priorities. Improves own professional growth through an on-going program of reading workshops seminars in-service activities conferences and/or advanced coursework at universities colleges institutions of higher education.
- Observes and assess student behavior to establish and maintain discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and communicates with students when academic and behavioral problems arise and exchanges information regarding appropriate behavior in the learning environment.
- Communicates with parents through conferences IEP Team meetings and other means regarding progress of assigned students.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Additional Duties
- Based on assignment manages itinerant responsibilities and additional assigned duties across multiple school sites including travel between sites maintenance of accurate mileage and service records.
- Based on assignment maintains and operates the pool as per regulations established by Anne Arundel County Health Department and/or pool to which assigned.

Education
- Bachelors Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
Experience
- One (1) year related experience with virtual learning technology remote instruction platforms Learning Management Systems and video conferencing tools if assigned to Virtual Academy required.
- Three (3) years successful teaching experience in physical education preferred.
Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Knowledge of school organization; goals and objectives; curriculum; teaching techniques; current trends research and materials of instruction in field of specialization.
- Understanding of the teaching/learning process.
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education. Ability to infuse technology into curriculum.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with administrators colleagues central office and school board staff students parents and community.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
- Crisis intervention may require participating in physical restraints.
- Ability to demonstrate techniques necessary to instruct students in area of assignment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to travel to/from Maryland Sites as necessary at the expense of the employee is required for in-person appearances at various intervals throughout the duration of the school year.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing Microsoft Office Suite Word Excel Outlook and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Language Requirements
- Bilingual/Biliterate If assigned to bilingual program bilingual and biliterate in targeted language native or near native preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses certifications and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- Hold or be eligible for educator certificate/license issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
- Hold or be eligible for Nationally Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) issued by Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) preferred.
- Based on assignment Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by American Heart Association Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers preferred.
- Based on assignment First Aid Certification issued by American Heart Association Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers preferred.
- Based on assignment Lifeguard Certification issued by American Red Cross licensed training provider required.
- Based on assignment Pool Operator License issued by Anne Arundel County Department of Health required.
- Based on assignment Drivers License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
- Daily access to reliable transportation.
