Job Summary:
Assist Lake Superior Research Institute LSRI staff with conducting botanical surveys at multiply state owned properties throughout Wisconsin and sampling aquatic vegetation in Amnicon/Dowling Lake District. Invasive plant surveys will take place in the Coulee Experimental State Forest Black River State Forest Flambeau River State Forest Governor Knowles State Forest Willow Flowage Scenic Waters and Brule River State Forest. Proximity of state forests to LSRI primary base of operations require that survey crew spend the work week (Monday Friday) over night. Due to the remote nature of this work hires may be asked to obtain University Driver Authorization and operate a motor vehicle on public roadways however we are willing to accommodate students who do not possess an valid license. It is expected sixteen work weeks (64 nights) in total will be spent overnight. LSRI will provide students selected for this position lodging and a meal reimbursement while conducting these surveys. This department is looking for enthusiastic flexible individuals with an interest in advancing their knowledge of invasive plants and aquatic vegetation. Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
Experience paddling a canoe
Experience operating a GPS unit
Experience operating a point and shoot camera
Experience recording data on a datasheet and/or tablet computer
Experience with or a strong interest in scientific plant identification
Demonstrated ability for attention to detail for following instructions from co-workers and for good communication skills.
Ability to prepare for and work in inclement conditions and be comfortable in a remote field setting in a small group.
Ability to lift/handle up to 50 pounds
Ability to work flexible hours which can be affected by weather
Ability to work 8-10 hours per day
Ability to pass a background check and meet general Human Resource requirements
Valid Class D or higher drivers license
