Role: Engineer E3 Electrical Transmission Lines
Contract Duration: 12 months

Role Overview
The Engineer E3 is a fully qualified and accredited engineering professional responsible for delivering engineering design estimating planning and quality management services on low to medium complexity projects. The role ensures all work is completed safely with quality on time and within budget while adhering to BC Hydros engineering standards and practices. This position focuses on electrical transmission line design (overhead and underground) within a utility environment supporting projects across the full lifecycle from conceptual design through to testing and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
Develop safe and effective engineering solutions using sound judgment and initiative for design analysis and problem-solving on assigned projects
Interpret engineering specifications and standards to produce accurate and compliant designs
Support project and operations teams in meeting safety cost quality and schedule objectives
Prepare estimates progress reports and recommend contractor payments
Coordinate work schedules and contribute to overall project planning and execution
Conduct independent engineering studies analysis and evaluations to support decision-making
Perform field reviews and on-site construction quality control to ensure design compliance
Engage senior engineering resources when addressing complex or non-standard problems
Prepare complete design work packages including scope duration and level of effort estimates
Produce signed and sealed engineering deliverables as Professional of Record (PoR)
Provide technical guidance and review of designs prepared by others
Manage design tasks including scope cost and schedule
Design overhead transmission lines and underground cable systems for voltages ranging from 60kV to 500kV
Prepare engineering documentation including reports specifications calculations and test plans in accordance with BC Hydro standards
Perform engineering calculations such as:
Electrical clearances
EMF and electrostatic field analysis
Induction and interference studies
Transient overvoltages and switching studies
Ampacity calculations
Lightning protection and grounding design
Soil resistivity and arcing studies
Develop designs and specifications for transmission line components including surge arresters disconnect switches and lightning protection systems
Support construction activities through technical assistance and field reviews
Prepare detailed technical reports with findings recommendations and conclusions for internal and external stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Engineering or Applied Science
Registered Professional Engineer (.) or Professional Geoscientist (.) or eligible for registration with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC)
Minimum 4 years of progressive engineering experience
Experience in transmission lines substations or protection and control systems preferred
Valid Class 5 drivers license
Required Skills
Strong understanding of multi-disciplinary project environments
Ability to deliver projects across full lifecycle (design to commissioning)
Proficiency in CAD systems and engineering drawing standards
Experience with industry-standard engineering and analysis software
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word Excel PowerPoint)
Strong written and verbal communication skills including technical writing
Nice to Have
Previous experience with BC Hydro or utility sector projects
Experience with telecom and/or protection and control systems
Familiarity with BC Hydro engineering design practices and project delivery processes
Site experience on large infrastructure projects such as substations hydroelectric facilities or transmission lines
Regulatory & Compliance Requirements
Must hold or be eligible for a Permit to Practice (P2P) through EGBC prior to assignment start
Work must comply with BC Hydros Professional Practice Management Plan (Quality Management Pillar)
Engineer must apply their own or their firms Permit to Practice number to sealed work
All engineering documentation produced will be retained by BC Hydro in accordance with EGBC bylaws
May be required to use digital signing and sealing technology (e.g. Notarius)
