Systems Engineer, Route 53

We are looking for passionate Systems Engineers ready to solve the worlds most complex technical challenges through innovative cloud computing solutions. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with strong development abilities to drive innovation and operational excellence when designing implementing and maintaining solutions across Route 53.

Amazon Route 53 is a highly available and scalable Domain Name System (DNS) service offered by Amazon Web Services. We operate in over 50 locations worldwide and provide advanced functionality such as latency-based routing (LBR) Private DNS Geo DNS routing DNS failover and integration with a number of AWS services. On top of that we offer fast change propagation with a 100% availability SLA. We are building some of the largest and most complex distributed systems in the world and we need adaptable people to help us implement and operate them.

This position can be based at our Melbourne or Sydney office locations.


Key job responsibilities
- Drive continuous improvement from disparate data through tooling and automation.
- Drive root cause analyses in collaboration with software development teams as well as influencing local development to improve operational performance
- Work in an environment where operational excellence is truly the first priority and where the degree of automation is above bar
- Use data feedback and subject matter expertise to measure and improve mechanisms
- Automate processes whenever possible to enable scalability and reduce manual effort
- Leverage technical acumen to drive the teams strategic decisions and direction

A day in the life
Its always Day 1 at Amazon. On a typical day a Route 53 Systems Development Engineer drives the technical direction for the team leads projects and works to ensure less tenured engineers are set up for success. The most exciting part of this role is seeing the team build and deliver the latest Route 53 features and software releases for our customers.

- Bachelors degree in Systems Engineering Computer Science or related field or relevant work experience
- 5 years of highly scalable systems experience
- Knowledge of networking protocols such as HTTP DNS and TCP/IP
- Experience with automation or working with scripting languages like Python Java Perl PHP Ruby Bash Shell or equivalent
- Experience in Linux OS and network troubleshooting

- Experience with AWS networks and operating systems
- Experience troubleshooting and debugging technical systems or experience that includes strong analytical skills attention to detail and effective communication abilities and experience in managing and troublshooting network
- Experience implementing process improvements
- Extensive knowledge of DNS infrastructure and protocols
- Hands-on experience configuring well-known DNS Server software such as BIND
